Do I go north from Mt Shasta to Grants Pass and take US-199 West or do I go South from mt Shasta and take CA-299 West? Any pros and cons?

Suggest you gas up in Grants Pass. I use the Fred Meyers on the truck route connecting the 199. The road was fine a month ago.

A little twisty, somewhat narrow in spots, but nothing I wouldn't take in all but the largest rig. I went by a couple of logging trucks and they were cruising. I would prefer the Redwoods over Mazanita, although the Trinty area on CA299 is OK.

A search on '199' turns up a number of threads about this road.

Grants Pass, Medford, and Crescent City should also be good search terms.
