We are taking that route from Springfield, MO, this summer and have been exploring some of the Route 66 guidebooks and websites since there's a lot of history along the route.
The Cadillac Ranch outside of Amarillo looks fun. Teenagers would probably enjoy spray painting the cars.
We plan to spend a couple of nights in Santa Fe, NM, since it seems like a vibrant city. The Blue Hole in Santa Rose looks like a fun stop.
I second the vote for Crystal Bridges, if it's near your route. It is amazing. The outdoor trails are fun to explore. Bentonville is a nice little city.
