Nevada to Grand Tetons & Yellowstone

We are planning a trip from Northern Calif. thru Ely, Nv around the end of May or Early June 2017.

Any advice on best routes to see the Grand Teton's & Yellowstone (we plan on staying at Fishing Bridge in Yellowstone).

The kicker is, I will be looking for a kennel for 2 dogs around West Yellowstone (or there abouts). We don't want to bring the dogs into Yellowstone as it will make the trip too restrictive for hiking , etc.

Someone we know left there dog in Cody, Wy, , but they didnt get to the Grand Teton's so thats why I'm planning to travel on the West Side.

Any info or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
  • This might help...it was on a national park site:

    48. Are there Dog Kennels in the West Yellowstone Area?

In the town of West Yellowstone proper there are no kennel services listed in the yellow pages: But here is information for the surrounding area:

Faithful Companion Bed & Breakfast for pets (406) 282-7410
    Doggie Daycare & Motel (406) 763-5585
    Querencia Kennels (406) 222-3011
    Montana Veterinary Hospital & Boarding (406) 586-2019
White & White Veterninary Hospital (local vet that has offices in west yellowstone) (406) 682-7151

... and this for Jackson, Wyoming

Both Yellowstone and Grand Teton is a hiker's paradise. . any chance of leaving the dogs at home with someone? I think you and the dogs would be happier. Would you leave them in a kennel for multiple days? You'll need more than a day to see the parks and do hiking.

Depending on what park you want to explore first (and I'd highly recommend you move from one park to the other or you'll be driving many unnecessary miles), if you want to do Yellowstone first then from Ely take 93 north to Idaho I-84, then pick up Hwy 20 at Idaho Falls which will take you into West Yellowstone.

If you want to stay in Grand Teton first take the same route to begin but at Idaho Falls take Hwy 26 east to Alpine then north through Jackson, WY.

There are nice dry campgrounds in Grand Teton and one RV park - Colter Bay RV.

When finished exploring Grand Teton, continue north through the park and into Yellowstone to Fishing Bridge.

Yes, you are probably correct, we should leave the dogs home but I hate to leave them anywhere for more than a few days. I plan on kenneling them for about 5 days so we can get into Yellowstone and then maybe at another kennel near Jackson.

It's getting complicated, so leaving them home makes sense.

But I'm exploring kennels in the area. I know of a kennel in Cody but none on the west side.

  • Straight north on US 93 to I-84/86, east to I-15, then US 20 to west entrance is one route. Memory serves me that one of the KOAs have kennels.
US 93 north to I-80 to Salt Lake then north on US 89. This would take yo u in south entrance through Grand Tetons.
