definitely looked at plenty of maps and have our normal route to get south into TN but never travel this time of year so we were just trying to figure out what the safest routes were

I35 to US54 to I40 to US54 to US70 to I10 then either I10 to 80 at Benson to Tombstone ( the fastest}) or my choice would be I10 to 80 at Steins to Rusty's RV Ranch (fantastic night skies in dark sky country) then continue on 80 to come into Tombstone from the South.
No good place to stay at Santa Rosa either stop at Tucumcari or continue on.
And just monitor the weather.

Thanks for everything, these comments were a great help since we have never really traveled during the winter with the RV. We are going to take Thom02099 suggested route and see how it goes just hoping all will be good getting out of NY across 78 and down 81.

What others have said. Since you're familiar with I-81/40, just pick up I-75 off I-40 outside of Knoxville and continue on to Chattanooga, take I-24 to I-59 on in to Alabama, and pick up I59/20 at Birmingham. Depending on weather, and more importantly the forecast, at that time you, could take I-20 west at Meridian MS or continue on I-59 to pick up I-12/10.

We used to travel this time of year regularly. I have some interesting advice based on real world experience.

Others have said watch the weather. This is very true, but start watching the national weather about a week before your planned departure. It may force a change in plans.

Be ready to hold up. What kills truckers, pilots and boaters?? Trying to push the weather. Mother nature has been doing this a long time and is very good at making storms.

To this end, depart with fuel and provisions onboard for three days. It is very easy to get held up for a solid day. It is not that hard to have to wait longer for the idiots to have the accident that they deserve and go home. The third day is so you don't have to worry about a second hold up.

It is kind of fun sitting in the warm coach in an highway rest area or a truck stop (don't count on any cramp grounds to be open) and watch the wreckers haul those "Gotta Git Theres" out of the ditches.

You have a self contained coach, take advantage of that.

We used that route and have had snow in April in New Mexico and Arizona.On the 3rd day we were in Amarillo, Texas and it was 90. The next night in Gallup, NM it was 15 and snowing. The next day we were in Wlliams, AZ and it was 32 with about 6" of snow on the ground.
For me a better route is Pa Turnpike to I-70 to I-44 in Missouri and then pick up I-40 in Oklahoma. Going I-80 south you may be more likely to hit snow or ice at some of the higher elevations. As others have said,watch the weather and be prepared to lay over a day or two.

Our most direct route from Colorado is I40. The truck traffic from Albuquerque to Flagstaff is very heavy. The road is also pretty rough. As previously stated the weather around Flag has been really bad as in 2' of snow. The traffic between Flag and Phoenix is heavy with many aggressive drivers. We have started taking I25 south to Hatch, NM and I10 to Tucson. I25 in southern NM is a really easy and nice drive.

The difference between the two routes is you maintain the altitude between Albuquerque and Flagstaff loosing it south of Flagstaff. On I25 you gradually loose altitude entering eastern Arizona.
