I today ,sent off the documentation and checks for our passport renewals. This is the fourth passport(every ten years) and every decade the process is simpler but more expensive. The first one in 83 was 35 dollars and took a trip to the international trade bldge in New Orleans. This one is 110 dollars and entirely by mail. The passports should be back in 4-6 weeks in plenty of time to start the trek to Alaska through Canada

My wife and I ahve Passports. Just got back from India and Germany, last trip was 89 countries from China to Indonesia. My Passport is full of stamps and I'm pretty happy, $110.00 fo $10 million worth of travel.

We get the passport cards for the kids, and full passports for ourselves. If we didn't occasionally have to travel to Europe for work we'd get the cards too. The chances of having to fly out of Canada are very very low.

If you only travel throughout the US and Canada (no Mexico), Nexus card is less expensive, but only good for 5 years instead of 10.

The only problem with this is if you get into an situation where you have to fly home, medical, family emergency etc...

For many years we lived and worked in the Carib. , traveling from one island country to the next , sometimes going thru customs two or three times a day .
When our passports expired we just kept on using them , it was actually faster cause no one bothered to stamp them .

At 65 and 66, DW & I (respectively) have just applied for our first ever passports. We are doing advance work for a May 1st 2015 departure from central Indiana to Fairbanks, etc and back through Pacific NW and home. I hope to be gone about 3-4 months. We're pretty excited! Be safe, everyone!
