Payson AZ area northward

Planning a trip from the Payson, AZ area (Woods Canyon Lake) to return to northern UT and want to take a more interesting scenic route. Towing 25 ft TT, looking at either running through the 4 corners area/SW Colorado, then up the Green River; OR running north of Payson up through central UT. Any ideas on best routes, places to stay along the way?
Thanks!
  • Take 89A in far Northern AZ. It's very lightly traveled and the scenery is beautiful.

Re Canyon Point Campground, it is a beautiful campground, and we have stayed there a number of times. But, it has one significant problem -- it is overrun with skunks, who own the place after dark. They are very bold, will come right into your area if you are eating or hanging out after dark. Campfires and lights do not deter them whatsoever.

I believe the reason for the skunk problem at Canyon Point is that the campground is fenced, which apparently keeps out the skunks' natural predators, whatever that may be. As a result, you don't see much wildlife at Canyon Point like you do at nearby campgrounds. I say this because we have also stayed at Aspen and Spillway campgrounds a few miles away near Woods Canyon Lake. Those two campgrounds are not fenced, and we have not run across the skunk problem there. Herds of elk often roam right through those last two campgrounds early in the morning. I have had them grazing within 20' of me and they were indifferent to my presence.
  • All I can tell ya is that the 4 corners area leaves a lot to be desired! Not much to see. Would tell ya if you have not been to go the other direction, over to the bryce canyon areas. Cedar breaks is nice area, so are the places around it, st george, there is a lake up there cant remember the name. Go up through escalante, Loa, hanksville and go that way. We went up there on MC some years ago and they had a cattle drive right down the highway something you dont see anymore. We took the highway to green river and over thru arches to dove creek and into west colo. Will actually depend on your time and amount of effort to go. take the roads to telluride, really nice scenery lakes to fish if inclined. end up in Ouray at the hot springs go north from there. We pulled out TT up thru this area no biggie.

Another place to look at maybe is gobblin state park, never been there seen the pics and want to visit one of these days. Its in the same area I described above, just need to map it out. The rock/erosion pics were great I saw looks like teepees etc. If you do go to the bryce area we enjoyed the Dixie forrest better than the canyon, or at least the 1st couple of view points in the park were good! Anyhow much to see it all depends on how long you have to see it.
  • I don't have route advise for you but please do yourself a favor and check out Canyon Point right near Woods Canyon. It is a beautiful campground!!!!! It was my favorite when living in Payson and then Overgaard, AZ.
