Petersburg, VA East Washington St railroad bridge (VA-36)

There is a railroad bridge that seems to not have the clearance height marked going eastbound on East Washington St, Petersburg, VA. It's just East of Woods Automotive body shop. My fiver is 12' 6" and I can't tell the clearance of the bridge from the Google streetview.

Anyone familiar with the area and that bridge? VA 36 continues East through Ft Lee, is civilian traffic allowed through Ft Lee?

Thanks, JT
  • Thanks, paulj. I see the road that you referenced. I agree that there doesn't seem to be any base checkpoints on VA 36. I will probably visit the Petersburg National Battlefield and it's off of VA 36 so I'm going to try that way. I will post update afterwards. JT

    Thanks for the info!

I did call Woods this afternoon, they (nice lady) said that the overpass was not marked but 18-wheelers go under it many times a day so I assume it will be OK for me. She also thought civilian traffic was allowed through Ft Lee. We'll find out on Wednesday morning!
Actually, 36 doesn't go "Through" Ft Lee, although, after Washington St turns into Oaklawn Blvd. Ft Lee is on both sides of 36.
  • There's another divide highway just a bit further north that connects to 36 on the other side of the the fort (114?).

In the Google sat view there aren't any checkpoints on 36. Looks like there is one on a side street to the south. Streetview should also confirm that.

  • The Motor Carrier road Atlas shows VA36 going thru Ft. Lee and does not list any restrictions.

I'd' be tempted to call Woods Body Shop or the local PD. The PD could tell you about access to/thru the base also.
