Possible Routing

Hello Everyone! im in week two of my travels, having stayed in Oklahoma for almost a Week traversing east to west! Fell in love with it! Having a wonderful time.

Staying in this great city Municipal campsite fully loaded and first night free, then $10.00 per night thereafter. Landscaping is pristine complete with pavilions, a central gazebo, swimming pool and of course, awesome facilities for the kids! It's in Brush, Colorado. Headed Monday if the snow isn't too tough to Wyoming and I'm soo grateful for all of your threads here that have afforded me such great information, because for this newbie I can tell you, there's no way I'b where I am without your education and feedback to guide me.

The hills of eastern Oklahoma, and the wind and dust storms have prepared me now --- I'm hoping, for the really big stuff thats ahead in the Tetons.. Maybe next year through the Rockies. And boy, some of the things I learned most of all is to stay on top of your gas, and "take it easy". That one day of driving through Kamsas and facing 40-plus mph winds knocked me out for a couple of days" lol.

In my opinion, If you plan on using mostly interstates, just pick any one of them and drive a couple hundred miles, Then you can go home because you have seen it all. You might as well fly. Secondary roads are slower and sometimes more trouble but I travel for the adventure.

Wondering why US-64 where it parallels I-40

tatest, just in case this has to do with my post above: I am only referring to that portion of 64/87 from Clayton, NM to Raton, NM.

Wondering why US-64 where it parallels I-40. I've done this, US-64 tends to be rough and slow going; because it was replaced by an almost parallel Interstate, the route did not get "trunk highway" status from the Gore committee and gets little funding for maintenance. US-64 remains marked, serving as I-40 Business Route for most of the communities between Conway and Sallisaw, but it is slow traveling. If you are headed toward Muskogee or Tulsa, better to stay on I-40 to the Muskogee Turnpike.

I honor all of your kind responses, thoughts and observations in all of this. I am going for broke on this trip, without ever having gone far in an RV, not knowing how to do much of anything regarding RVing, crept to prepare myself as much as possible given the time allowed here. I THINK I want scenic, will I get tired of driving? LMAO --- only the shadow knows...Each day my plans change: am meeting a friend now in Taco NM from Oklahoma and that's as far as I've got planning wise. Thank GOD cuz I can't take tooo much more of my own "what of's", or " is this the best route?", and don't forget ________! I don't know if I'm going for a week or three months. It all depends upon my rig holding out and money lol... I care about not much else.

So I'm keeping all of these responses, routes, and when I get to NM, theoretically, I'll know more then teehee..

When push comes to shove, this is the place to be where people KNOW their stuff. And for that??? I thank you all for being here...

In general I would like to agree with the route suggested by TyroneandGladys above. Yes, it is about 200 miles longer (add a day) but in my opinion it would be worth it UNLESS there is an interest ONLY in the destination.

The only additional suggestion I would make is to take US 82 from Paris, TX across to US 287 near Wichita Falls, to avoid Dallas, and its overflow north into the surburbs, entirely.

This is the route we take to Colorado now that routes closer in to Dallas have become so congested. It makes for a pleasant drive across north Texas.

Another variation would be to follow US 64/87 to Raton, NM and pick up I-25 to go on up into Colorado.

This is not to say one is better than the other: Santa Fe remains one of our favorite RV stops in the US, but sometimes we choose to go straight up to Colorado. Lots of good choices

Just Havana, Fl, to Jackson Hole, Wy, shortest route on streets and trips 2100 miles. 50 mile average makes this 40+ hours of driving time. So you are 80+ hours driving time for round trip and ain't seen nothing.
You need to pick your avg speed you can maintain, your hours you tend to drive per day. Then you can arrive at a distance you can go. Then you have to add the time you want for sight seeing. This appears to be a dream trip you would like to do someday. It would be a great trip. Good Luck.

Tyrone & Gladys: Yes, that would be a nice route, too, but it's 222 miles longer than the most direct route, not 800 miles shorter. It's pretty but one needs to be aware of the mountain climbs from Durango to Jackson unless one made some longer alternative routes. We've been in those areas many times and love the mountains. There are many routes to get there - just depends if you want fast or scenic.

Recommend Havana to Dallas TX to Amarillo TX to Santa Fe NM then to Pagosa Springs CO to Durango CO to Dinosaur National Monument CO to Jackson Hole. A whole lot more to see than what you will see in Kansas and Nebraska and from what I can see about 800 less miles. I have always had good luck with using Google maps for routing a vacation. Then zoom in on where I plan to stop and search RV parks,

Thanks, Ellen, for the courtesy of your response. I would not go so far as to say that I'm "happy with" the Undertow software. The problem, of course, is that the campground information and ratings which were previously supplied by Trailer Life are no longer available in the program. So, even though the information is becoming seriously dated in the 2010 version, I continue to use it 95% of the time.

It is regrettable that so few ever discovered how valuable this cooperative effort at producing navigational software was. And that we who did discover it, have lost much of its value.
