Providence to PA on Monday morning - what path?

We are leaving Providence, RI at 7:30am on Monday, and are headed across I-80 in PA. Obviously, the most direct route is I-95, but we've had very bad luck with that route, and the timing is likely to make traffic worse. So, I've been planning to come across towards Hartford and then take 84 through NY and 81 down to 80.

In another thread, I asked about Hartford traffic (since I'll be hitting it right around 9am), and found that the route south of the city is blocked off - meaning I have to go right into town at the end of rush hour.

So, is that still the best bet, or is there a different path I should take to get from Providence to I-80 in PA?

    Mickey,
come out of RI on 95 south doen to the Conn river, there take Ct rt 9..which is a 4 lane divided...over to 91 south...91 south for maybe 6 miles to 691 over to 84 west...hardest thing you will have to do is stay awake...Chuck
  • definitely 84/81/80 is the better ride, we have gone through Hartford at all times of day and night, always hit some sort of traffic. it is deal-able, much better then crossing the Tap or GWB

You are saying that someone says that 91 south is blocked? That is odd, since it is a major N/S Interstate. At any rate, if you can take 91 south, then 691 west when you come to it, it will drop you back on 84 after Hartford. We use that route, as even without traffic, 84 through Hartford is nice to avoid. I think the engineers had a rough night before the laid out that section.

No. I'll be coming towards Hartford on Rt 2 and was planning to take Rt 3 across to 91s. However, there is major bridge construction on Rt 3, meaning I'd have to take Rt 2 all the way up to 84 in Hartford. Just making sure that's the best way to go.
  • Rt 3 bridge is under construction and there is nothing wrong with 91. Take 84 to 91 south then 691 west back to 84.

  • When we travel from the Harrisburg PA area to Bangor ME, I always take I-81 N to I-84 east into New England.
And, I've gone through Hartford during rush hour during a rain storm in our 37' Southwind.
It wasn't that bad, not fun but not bad.
    I think I-84 to I-81 & I-80 are your best route.
