With luck it will take them a looong time to figure it out. - darbone85737ExplorerA cruise ship dock in Puerto Penasco is an ill conceived idea in the first place. No one wants to go there.

Nice, I do, you may be a bit narrow in your thinking. - hypoxiaExplorer

Word is that it is the departure port. Sounds like a government project at its best. - rocmocExplorer

Would make sense. Able to travel to AZ location, take a cruise provided bus down to Rocky Point from USA and cruise the length of the Sea.

Might be kinda cool. It would esentially be a cruise ship port for Arizona. Hope it works out for them. Might be kinda fun for a week although we are not really cruise ship folks. Maybe someday though. - mexicorussExplorer IIOK don't get offended here.
The Port Project makes sense in the cruising world for many reasons, here are some from a different perspective.
#1 this is a Home Port. It is the only Home Port from San Diego to Venezuela. It is close to the border and yes Sky Harbor Intl airport in Phoenix as well as Tucson Intl airport are only 4 hours away by an easy drive. It is conceivable that some traffic will be generated by the strategic location of the port. So you are in Ohio, you see an advertisement for a cruise in the Upper sea of Cortes' (the worlds aquarium) you love cruising so you book a trip, you fly into Phx a couple days before, you hop one of the many shuttles that will be created by this venture and come down to Puerto Peñasco a day or two and stay in a luxo condo or super nice Hotel on Sandy Beach (regardless of a previous post many many people already love coming here)you hop on the ship and set sail for a 5-7-10 day sea of Cortes' super cool float. You are feeling rewarded when you come back to Peñasco and vow to return in the future.
Or the most likely scenario.....you live in Guadalajara, or Monterrey, or Mexico City, or Tijuana, or Queretaro, or any of the other fabulous cities of Mexico. You have always wanted to sail the sea of Cortes'. You want to take your whole family.
Now you are able to realize this dream because there is a home Port on the Sea which resides in your home country. Never before could you have sailed because in order to do so you would have to go through all of the red tape and delays associated with obtaining a US visa so you could then board a boat in the USA so then you could sail in your home countries water.... and there is never a guarantee that the USA will give you the travel visas anyway.
So you book a trip and fly directly into Puerto Peñasco into the new Intl airport. You take the 30 trip to Sandy Beach waiting to get on the ship. Sounds like a plan to me.
We are full time resident of Mexico and we are invited to sail on the first trip in a few years and you better bet we will be on it. I have never sailed before and I really want to do this trip.
This is a great thing in a great place in the world. - darbone85737ExplorerLet me guess, Russ..... You're in the real estate/advertising or hospitality business in Rocky Point.
Rocky Point is one of the most unremarkable cities in Mexico. It has nothing to recommend it as a destination, especially if you have to take a plane and 4 hour bus ride to get there.
As far as Mexican nationals, there is no way to compare Rocky Point to places like Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta or the beaches in Nayarit which are much closer to their homes and much nicer.
Just my opinion as someone who has been there but has no financial stake in any of these places - fugawibillExplorerRuss nails it. For those of us who live full time in Mexico, wanting to do a cruise, and not travel to California or Florida, it’s a no brainer. I live at a beach town, but a cruise would be appealing, and give me a chance to see the Baja without driving. They were supposed to base a ship here in Mazatlan, but it didn’t happpen. Hopefully, Puerto Penasco will. Would work out great for me, as I will get a new RV permit, do some shopping NOB, catch a Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers concert, and the cruise is a bonus. May even do the Copper Canyon again, and make it a killer trip.
