Pulling 5th wheel through Yellowstone

I am visiting Yellowstone this month and wanted to know if pulling a 39 ft 5th wheel was OK on HWY 14/16 (on the East side) through the park up to Gardiner, rather than going around the North on I-90?
I am staying outside Yellowstone in Gardiner and then West Yellowstone for a week at each.

Make sure you stay at Bakers Hole three miles from W. Yellowstone. Really nice park and cheaper. Get a site with elect and you will be good.

I have reservations at Rocky Mt RV park in Gardiner and at Yellowstone Grizzly in West yellowstone. It just looked like a much shorter pull through Yellowstone from rapid City versus going I-90 North of the Park and then 89 down to Gardiner.
Just wanted to make sure the pull on 14/16 and through Yellowstone was OK for us to make.

So, you would be coming in the East Entrance going through Cody?

If so, I suggest avoiding 14A like the plague. If, through Cody is the way you are suggesting, it is beautiful, but make sure your brakes are in good shape...

Coming from the park going that way, you will see a lightning bold going up the side of the mountain. You will wonder what it is until you are on it and realize it is the poured concrete of the switchbacks.

if your going from the Black Hills to Yellowstone I would recommend going over the Bighorn Mountains. In fact I would try and book a trip at Sibley Lake Campground. Nice campground located next to a beautiful mountain lake. Its about halfway between the Black Hills & Yellowstone. They have 30 amp available.

Its almost guaranteed you will see a moose or two in the Bighorns. We've had them literally come right through camp. There's also a lot of elk on top of the mountain. There are a few activities to see and do in the Bighorns...waterfalls, Medicine Wheel, fishing, etc. I think its a scenic byway.

You can stop at the New Corner Grocery Store in Dayton, WY before heading up the mountain. They have diesel pump located on the north side of the building. The road up is switchbacks. You'll see several turnouts to pull over before hitting the long steep stretch up the mountain. You may even have the opportunity to watch hang gliders. There is no cell service on top of the mountain. Well its sketchy in spots so might as well not be any. Going down the mountain hwy14A is steeper than hwy14.

My personal opinion is that it would break up the trip between the two destinations. pm me if you would like to know more about this area. We spend several days camping there every year.

It's called Bakers Hole, located 3 miles North of W. Yellowstone. They have water at the entrance if you need it. Make sure you go in with empty holding tanks, no sewer. 33 of the 73 sites have elect. Without the Golden Eagle pass it's $16.00 a night no elect. and $22.00 a night with elect. Rates are HALF that if you have the pass. I think you can stay 17 days.

I may have it mixed up with another rv campsite in the area, I drive past it several times each summer, have driven thru it a couple times. If I remember its a bit tight for bigger rigs, but as said may have it mixed up with another. I do know some of the older campgrounds can get pretty tight for these large high profile fifth wheels.

I wouldn't worry about, if its full, go to Slide Inn. Slide is about 20 miles from Bakers, and 30 miles from the west gate. Great place to camp, and away from the crowds around West Yellowstone. Full hookups, and cheaper then most around West Yellowstone . Definitely cheaper then that overpriced Grizzly RV in West Yellowstone.

Probably pretty good. The trick is to get there after eight (checkout is 2:00) and just slowly drive through the park. Keep an eye out for the ones with elect. if that is what you want. They have 33 of those, note the reservation cards as you drive by and see if they are checking out that day. If so, ask them about what time they will leave if not already packing up....go to the camp host and tell them you would like to grab that site as soon as they pull out. If they agree, the will put an occupied sticker on it for you to save it. otherwise, drive until you see one pull out and grab it.

Go to W. Yellowstone and Bakers Hole three miles North of town you will find a great RV park with 33 of the 73 sites have 50 amps, water at the entrance. Make sure your tanks are empty except water. If you have the Golden Access pass you get one with elect. for $22.00 a day. Beautiful park. $16.00 without elect.

Make sure you stock up on food before you go there as everything in town is three times the price. You will need to arrive between 8 am and 2 pm which is check out time and just circle the park until you find one that they are leaving. It's first come there. A third of the price in town and your only three miles from YS park.
