if your going from the Black Hills to Yellowstone I would recommend going over the Bighorn Mountains. In fact I would try and book a trip at Sibley Lake Campground. Nice campground located next to a beautiful mountain lake. Its about halfway between the Black Hills & Yellowstone. They have 30 amp available.
Its almost guaranteed you will see a moose or two in the Bighorns. We've had them literally come right through camp. There's also a lot of elk on top of the mountain. There are a few activities to see and do in the Bighorns...waterfalls, Medicine Wheel, fishing, etc. I think its a scenic byway.
You can stop at the New Corner Grocery Store in Dayton, WY before heading up the mountain. They have diesel pump located on the north side of the building. The road up is switchbacks. You'll see several turnouts to pull over before hitting the long steep stretch up the mountain. You may even have the opportunity to watch hang gliders. There is no cell service on top of the mountain. Well its sketchy in spots so might as well not be any. Going down the mountain hwy14A is steeper than hwy14.
My personal opinion is that it would break up the trip between the two destinations. pm me if you would like to know more about this area. We spend several days camping there every year.
