Reynosa To Matehuala

We have been entering Mexico at Columbia the past few years but with the truck weight issue we are going to try Reynosa. We like to make it to Matehula the first day. Looking at the map the it looks like you can avoid Monterrey and take Hwy 85? around Cadereyta de Jimenez to Linares over to Hwy 57 and then on to Matehuala. Has anyone used this route?

  • Yes we have done that route, it is quite a scenic drive from Linares to 57 and quite a climb. We did it with our coach and toad and stayed at a Pemix on your left shortly after getting on 57 as it was getting late. That was back in 2014 but I dont think things have changed to much since then
  • And by the way that was the year when we first met you at Hacienda Contrearas. Good to hear you are coming to Mexico hope to see you again
  • Thanks Pete. It would be great to see you and Linda again!!
  • Instead of crossing at Reynosa, why don't you try the brand new bridge 10 miles east. The Donna-Rio Bravo bridge is in a rural area south of Donna, TX and North of Rio Bravo, MX. The only thing right there is a cambio. Take a look at it on Google Earth. Go directly south of Donna, TX to see it.

Victoria Palms RV Resort along with a few other RV Parks are located in Donna. If you want to spend a free night before crossing there is a brand new WAL MART in Donna with lots of room to park.
  • I don't know about what they have at the Donna crossing today. We used it 2 years ago nice easy crossing the government buildings on the Mexico side where all there except there was nothing in the buildings and 1 guard there who just waved us through. So if you need paper work better check to see if can be done there.
  • For quite a number of years we would spend time in the Weslaco area before heading into Mexico. We would walk across the bridge at Progresso and get all the paper work done there and then we were free to chose where we crossed and what day or time. Over the years we have crossed at all the border crossing it seems some better then others. If you are in that area the crossing at Anazuldas just west of Reynosa is a nice crossing and gets you onto the highyway to Monterray with no problem and you dont have to traverse Reynosa to get to it.
It would be great if Chris would chime in on this as he knows the area well.
  • peterth has a good idea. Getting the paperwork done without the RV the day before makes good sense The crossing he described in Nuevo Progreso is very easy. Park in the parking lot at the foot of the bridge on the American side, walk over the bridge and enter the Mexican government building which is right at the foot of the bridge on the Mexican side.
  • Might be worth getting the Visas the day before. We applied for our TIP online and we are expecting it next week.
  • I am in Matehuala, took the road from Colombia with a Class A. I took 85, 85D, 40D, then 40 to join 57, 57D. Super nice Highway, cost around 700 pesos.

I went from Reynosa last year and we took 40 to 40D, then back to 40 to join 57, 57D.

So you looped around Monterrey and did not use the 85 before Monterrey that goes to Linares? How was the road construction on 85 between Nuevo Laredo and Monterrey?
