Route 19 in W. Virginia

Hello,

We are traveling south from PA on 79 and heading to 64 East in WV. It has us exiting at exit 57 on 79 S to 19S and then to 64 east. Can anyone tell me if 19S in WV is RV friendly? It looks like a "scenic" route and we have a 38 foot MH, towing. Our clearance is about 13' high.
We are concerned about bridges and tunnels..Thanks in advance for any help.
  • nice road. ran over it some yrs ago.i think that's the road that has the bridge day thing.now its all happy-camping
  • We came down from Virginia through WV and stayed at the worst KOA I have ever stayed at. Any recommendations for a 38 MH towing off of 79? Some of the state parks have length limitations. Thanks!

Some people refer to these towns (especially Summersville) as "speed traps", but I respectfully disagree. In the built-up areas where there are traffic lights, the speed limit is reduced from 65 mph to 50 mph, not unreasonable IMHO. Just stay under the 50 mark and you'll be fine.

Using Rt. 19 instead of going through Charleston on the tolled WV Turnpike saves many miles and some money as well. There a two tolls at the south end of Rt. 19 just before I-77, but they aren't expensive.
  • WV has good roads and any of their state parks that has the word "resort" in its name is nothing short of OUTSTANDING.

  • Thanks ya'll for your input. I really appreciate it..We'll be taking that route.
  • We have run it occasionally and enjoy the 1950s pre interstate highway system feel that it has. A bit of a time warp feeling. We usually connect to it via route 119 from the west at the south end.
  • That section of 19 is good road, its a regular big rig truck route, so no low clearances. you will have to slow down for several small towns. when I lived back there, if going east to 64 from hwy 19, I would actually use hwy 60 to cut across. 60 is all 2 lane and more twisty than 19, it follows some creeks & hollers, but if you're not in a hurry, it goes through the heart of WV countyside. if you stop at the right place and ask nicely, you can find some real mountaineer moonshine along hwy 60.
  • This is my Pittsburgh to FL route. US 19 is all 4 lane and a nice drive.

You cross the highest bridge east of the Mississippi, the New River Bridge. Stop at the scenic overlook.

  • Its a good road. I take it to Florida every year pulling a 40' 5er.
Its 4 lane with a few stop lights for access, as it is not an interstate. Some hills but very easy drive, and it cuts off several miles and brings you out near Beckley. I forget the exits, but it is well marked.
