Route From Poughkeepsie, NY to Cooperstown, NY

We will be going to Cooperstown, NY from Poughkeepsie, NY.
We will be driving a 40 FT fifth wheel with 13'3" in height.
Can we take I-87 to 23 to I-88. Or 23 to 145 then onto I-88 South???
Anyone know those routes for type of road and heights??
Any help would be appreciated.
  • Was out that way earlier this year... Took 87 (New York State Thruway) to Albany... Continued on NYST which becomes 90 to route 88... Took 88 for a short while and then got on route 20 and continued to route 31 to access Glimmer Glass State Park... you can continue down 31 to Cooperstown...

What CG are you trying to get to?

This route should be fine with heights... Interstate highway for 87, 90 and 88 to route 20, route 20 does pass through some small towns but is mostly two lanes each side and 50mph...

  • We were at Glimmerglass SP about a month ago, and went to Cooperstown then South to I-88. In Cooperstown, there was a "narrow road" sign just South of Main St. on Chestnut (which is hwy 28). This was a large, orange, temporary sign advising vehicles wider than 8' 6" to take a detour. It was the type of sign you usually see advising of road construction. It faced the South bound traffic. It indicated the detour was 5.x miles ahead, best I remember, which would put the narrow road between Cooperstown and I-88. However, we pulled our fifth wheel that way, and never saw a problem or any type construction. So, the sign was either old and had not been taken down, or was new and the construction had not begun yet.
  • When in Cooperstown, do the farmers Museum on route 80 just north of the village.
