Sante Fe to Brekenridge

In a few weeks I plan on leaving Arizona to Brekenridge, CO. My thought is to go to Sante Fe via I40 and I25 and head north on 285 out of Sante Fe. Then connect to Highway 9 to Brekenridge. I have never been on that road and know there are a number of mountain passes to traverse (Poncho Pass, Trout Creek Pass and Fremont Pass, in that order going north). Has anyone been on that stretch lately or have information? Or is it better to go Hyw. 24 to Vail and then Brekenridge? Or stick to the Interstates? I will be driving a '98 40 ft Safari Serengeti and the toad is a '05 Toyota 4 runner. Also, how is the Tiger Run Rv park and did they also get flooded recently? Any help is much appreciated. • Tiger Run is a very nice park. If you are a Bourbon drinker there is a great craft distillery in town.
  • I live in Dillon and head out through Breck often. Hoosier Pass is in good shape (though I'm a 22ft class-c not towing anything). Even during some of the worst winter storms Hoosier Pass generally stays open while other passes are closed or have chain restrictions. I don't imagine any snow accumulation in the next few weeks but there's already been a couple dustings above 10,000 ft along the Ten Mile Range and given how much rain the state is getting, ya never know. The curves do wind around pretty sharply but the steepness is manageable and the road surface is good. I haven't camped at Tiger Run but every time I hear it mentioned, it's been for good things. While Summit County is under a flood warning currently, nothing seems to be at risk in terms of roads, campgrounds, what have you, I just wouldn't set up a tent in a seemingly dry creek bed.
  • Thank you Padredw. Good information. Yes the correct pass on 9 headed north toward Brekenridge is Hoosier Pass. Anyone towed over that recently?
  • I have driven over 9 a couple of times, but never towing. The route I HAVE towed is to take 24 to Leadville (no need to go to Vail) then Colorado 91. The pass at Climax is Fremont--no problem for me. Then a rather straight descent into Cooper Mountain and I-70. I've made this route many times towing a 34' fifth-wheel. I mention this because there is no need to go by Vail.

I'm not saying this is better than 9. It is just that I have never had occasion to go that way towing. It certainly does look more direct. At least you have some alternatives. Maybe someone with experience towing on 9 will chime in here.

EDIT to add. Poncha Pass is an easy pass coming down into Poncha Springs near Salida.
