We changed our one night stop to here after discovering that North South Lake state campground didn't have hookups. It's been cold and we needed the heat, and the gen blew out the muffler when I started it just before leaving on this trip.We came east on I-88 from Binghampton, and a cursory look at the route (on a paper map) said NY 23 to 23A to 32 to 212. The GPS had a better idea though, and had us bang a right off 23a onto County Road 16. When I saw the 4 ton road ahead sign, I should have turned around, but in the past, every time I second guessed TomTom, he was right and I was wrong. Not this time. County route 16 turned into this narrow, winding downgrade through a state forest barely wide enough for 2 cars to pass. I stopped several times to let the brakes cool.The GPS took the shortest route (and straight line distance it was), but there were a few white knuckle moments along the way.So if you find yourself motoring down State route 23A in the Catskills, and TomTom says to take a right on Bloomer Rd, just say no...

We had a similar situation when heading to an RV park in NY. The GPS said to go one way, and the Good Sam campground directory said another. We guessed those directory instructions were probably right. Turns out it was the right choice. If we'd followed the GPS, we'd have come to a bridge with only 10 feet of clearance and would have had to back up over 1/4 mile to get turned around. Our FW is 12'4".

Never trust a GPS thats designed for a car, when traveling in your rv. buy your self a rv GPS. The cost of a rv gps is pennies compared to what damage could result in going onto roads not really designed for rvs

Never set your GPS for the "shortest route". Set it for the "fastest route" instead. The shortest route will sometimes have you following the cows to the barn, while the fastest route will usually keep you on the better roads.

On Google Maps I see two roads that drop down steep ravines to the Hudson Valley. The narrower, steeper one is Platte CLove Rd. The one a bit further north, dropping from Tannersville to Patensville is 2 lane. Looks like this is the highest, steepest bluff along the Hudson.

Turns out that the campground put up a lot of blue and white signs pointing you in the correct direction to avoid the lola bridgita. We stopped at a mall to try to figure it out, and as we left the mall driveway, there, right in front of us was a sign "Frosty Acres".

My bad. It was actually a couple of days before we hit NY. It was Geneseo CG. In Geneseo Illinois. Now I'll know what to watch out for in NY!

The road looked familiar (on Streetview). Turns out I had looked it up in June during another difficult road discussion. Google directed them down it on a Wellsboro, PA to Saugerties, NY route.

Well it's a lesson well learned. I will check the TomTom route against Google maps etc in the future. I did search the forums for this campground and the only thing I took away from the only thread found was to go to Rip Van Winkle instead. Same GPS route.

So now there's another thread for search to find, helping some future unsuspecting GPS follower.

Does your TomTom have an RV setting? If not, you should always check against another source.

Since reading your post, I asked my Dezl 560, which does have an RV setting, to give me a route from 222 Water St., Binghampton, NY to the Saugerties/Woodstock KOA. It's route is NY 17 to NY 52 to US 209 to I-87 to NY 212

That's 8 miles further than if I forced it to take I-88 to NY 23, etc. For this route, it chose to stay with NY 23 A to NY 32 A to NY 32 to NY 212, and did not cut straight down to the KOA, making the route a couple of miles longer.

BTW, it shows the travel time for the NY 17 route to be 2 hours 36 minutes and for the I-88 route to be 2 hours 37 minutes.

It is my experience that the Dezl 569 does give better RV routing than does any GPS I've use that didn't have RV routing.

We always call the campground to make sure it is GPS "friendly." The office usually will know if the GPS will take you the wrong way.

Also, we never leave a paved road. Never.

The same happened to us near Gettysburg Pa, we took the GPS route. It got very narrow and I was just hoping that I didnt come to a bridge or road washout.

Looking for a RV GPS, still not sure which is the best to buy Rand McNally ( GS) or the Garmin
