Sea Snakes

Some are found in Mexico, but I don't think they are common.

However, one sea snake is all that is needed to put Mexico on my DW's 'do not go' list.

I am not sure if what we see while fishing is a sea snake...it is a snake in the water, so it fits the description. There are a few in this area which is just North of Puerto Vallarta. The scuttlebutt is that they are very poisonous. Probably about 2 feet long and not large around..

I've seen several yellow-bellied sea snakes on the beach in La Manzanilla, Jalisco. They usually are not common on the shore, but have probably been injured and washed ashore. In 2 cases I had to warn children away from the still alive snakes who were using sticks to play with them. They can be very poisonous.

Sea snakes are very poisonous, but fortunately not aggressive. I read a news article in recent months that they were showing up further north on the Pacific West’s shores due to changes in the Pacific Ocean’s warm current:

Better put Southern California beach’s on that ‘do not go’ list, then.

Diving in waters around GUAM we came across them often.

YES they can be agressive when it's mating time
They are also very curious which can make them seem agressive cause they will 'check' you out

Yes they are very poisonous! Fortunately they do not bite in 'defense' so bites to humans are usually 'blanks'
They will bite your flippers as you back pedal away.

Inhabit shallow waters so they tend to get washed up on shore following a storm

When we visited Cozumel back in the early 2000's, we were snorkelling near where there was a sunken plane if I recall correctly. It was beautiful, and we used to take the sealed packets of crackers with us to crumble and release for the fish (parrot, sergeant majors, etc) to swim around us for photos. All of a sudden as we were headed out quite way from the beach snorkelling I looked up and hubby pointed to look down and there was what appeared to be a snake for sure and it was black and white zig zag type pattern. I've never swam/finned back to shore as fast in all my life LOL.

PS: A little off track but interesting to us. We've seen other types of very long fat snakes swimming across Lake Shasta as well!

We get yellow bellied sea snakes on a semi-regular basis in Zihuatanejo and occasionally on our Southern California beach. They are the most widely distributed snake in the world, but I read somewhere that they were unable to bite when they were out of the water-probably because they are in dire straights when they are on shore!
They are beautiful.

Saw a sea snake in Tenacatita, Jalisco, one winter. It was a small one, found by some Mexican boys who were playing with it as it moved about in somebody's Croc footwear. I had a general book on fishes of the Americas, with one single entry right at the back, concerning snakes. The boys had one! I mentioned how dangerous their snake could be, that they should let it go, but to take it to the rough side where swimmers seldom took to the water. They had had some fun with it, and the small snake seemed to enjoy the attention. The book mentioned that this snake, with one, long yellow stripe on its underside, was prevalent in all tropical oceans of the world, and its bite was very venomous.
