SoCal to BigSur Where should I stop and rest?

I have reservation up in Big Sur next week. I will be leaving my home around 8PM driving for about 4-5hours/200 miles and resuming in the morning. I don't want to start up the windy road until day break. I don't want to check into an RV park to just wake up and leave. What do you do when traveling and just need to close your eyes for 5 or 6 hours and eat breakfast. If you have made this same trip where do you stop?
  • Rest stops I've seen all have signs that prohibit overnight parking. CHP's area so how busy they are will determine if you're bothered. There are two private RV parks in the same area as the Motel 6. The first is Morro Strand RV Park (not to be confused with Morro Strand State Park a mile north). The other is Morro Dunes at the end of the road (about 500 feet past Morro Strand).

The Morro Strand State Park is a the north end of the city (Yerba Buena St.) Make a left and follow the road down to the park. No hook ups but quick in and out for your purpose.

If you get here early enough and want to drive to San Simeon State Park you will be 30 or so miles closer to the Big Sur area (about 5 or less from the curvy section).

Have any of you ever stayed at a rest stop?

we have stayed at rest stop in Amarillo but it had 24 hours security and WIFI. It would depend on if the area was safe. You'd want to be choosey. Take Care.
  • Are you going up HIghway 1 or are you going to Monterey and coming down Highway 1? If you are going up Highway 1, there is a Motel 6 in Morro Bay that is at the intersection of Highway 1 and Atascadero Road. The street in front of the hotel is very wide and even level and it's in a fairly quiet area. It's illegal to camp in your RV on the street, but I've pulled over in this spot several times to do a quick overnight. Just turn the lights off and park in front of the hotel and law enforcement will likely think whomever owns the RV is in the hotel and not bother you. I was not bothered when there. Then you are right on Highway 1 for your drive to Big Sur in the morning.

The Quote function serves to identify whom you are quoting...although in this case it's obvious.

Go on line and look for all the Indian Casinos on your route. When you find one located in area where you might want to stop for night, give them a call about parking in their parking lot for the night.
