SoCal to Prescott, AZ in 50s Cars

We have relatives in Prescott and make this trip a couple times a year. We always take the I-40, 89 route. We have gone the other way when we are at Quartzsite and want to visit. The road is "ok", but we prefer the other.

I've often wondered... how much trunk space is left when the top is down, and how do you get to it?

Thanks Ron for the info. You're right about the trunk space. There's just a bin about 3'x3' in the trunk when the top is down. We will not travel with the tops down so we will use the full trunk and probably the back seat. Why do you prefer I40 to 89? Another hour of driving, for those who may not have AC, is worth considering. Do you know if there is cell service? Also, do you think traveling the other route would take longer than we think so we may not save an hour?

It's easy to get to it by bringing the top up.

And a bit more scenic due to the winding mtn road on last stretch coming into Prescott

Well, the southern route is shorter for you (from Newhall) but longer for me (from Ridgecest).

The southern route is just fine. As mentioned by Old Biscuit, the last leg of that route is up and over a mountain range. Lots of winding curves...but completely doable.

I would assume there is cell service...can't really remember if we've ever tried our cell phones when we took that route.

Well, as far as driving time, the southern route probably is a little quicker.

Why don't you go one way and then come back the other way?

My Fairlane is a little newer than yours and slightly modified... but I've always loved those 57's....58's and 59's not so much. I had a 60 Starliner and really liked it until I got my 60 Impala. No more Fords until my Mother her 64 Fairlane and willed it to me after her death in 90.

Does anyone know what gasoline is available after turning off I-10 onto AZ-60 going to Prescott?

AZ-60 is a well traveled road but only very small towns along the way. Salome, Aguila, Congress, Yarnell, Peeples Valley all have at least 1 gas station each.

The last 10 miles before Prescott is very windy but scenic through the mountains. All good road.

In Yarnell grab a bite to eat at the Ranch House restaurant. Old fashioned road house cafe.
