Tetons to Oregon Coast Route Recommendations

I am planning a trip from the Tetons to the Oregon Coast in August & September and will be towing a small 17' camping trailer. We have visited Yellowstone several times so will probably skip it this year.

I would like to visit Mount Rainier, Mount ST. Helens, and possibly Mount Hood and some of the waterfalls near the Columbia River. We probably will be staying in NFS, BLM, NP and State campgrounds. I anticipate going down the Oregon coast and returning to Virginia on a more southerly route, perhaps as far south as Yosemite before turning east.

I have looked at route 93 after leaving the Tetons up to Lolo near Missoula, MT and down route 12. Some sources suggest the area around Stanley, ID is very picturesque so that may be another option. Other route options?

Having driven in Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado I feel relatively comfortable driving in the mountains. I am planning this as a leisurely paced sight seeing road trip with maybe some short hikes.

Any recommendations as to routes through Idaho, Washington, and Oregon. This is my first trip to the Northwest so advice on routes and places to visit would be greatly appreciated.
  • Haven't been up 93 yet, but US 12 (Lolo Pass) is a beautiful ride. Some nice NFS CGs in that stretch too. That will bring you in north of the Columbia River, though. I-84 from the Pendleton area to the coast is an interesting ride - not all that attractive at first, but gets real pretty about halfway across Oregon. Some SP CGs right by the interstate that a lot of people seem to like (we didn't try them so don't know how the road noise is.) Oregon and Idaho have some really nice SPs.

Another route farther south would be to take US 26 from Jackson to Alpine and then west through the Palisades area, and catching up with US 20 in Idaho Falls. Take 20 (or I-15 to 20) west to Craters of the Moon Nat'l Monument. Neat little park, very interesting (it's the remains of a 2000-year-old lava flow). You can continue on 20 west to near Boise, where you can pick up I-84 west.
