Texas to Portland - Mid December - Route advise?

Thanks for your input folks. We would fly home for Christmas but we have our dog with us and he may be a bit too big to put in a kennel under the seat. And he would probably bark trying to get us to let him out which we can't, so we drive home.

We are coming out of Texas from Big Bend National Park via Alamogordo and Carlsbad area.
