I also received a similar Milepost notice, though mine indicated an Android version was also available, though I haven't checked yet.

Interesting, but.....

Given the very high cost of using data on the phone in Canada, and the long stretches of "no service", would this be very useful? What am I missing?

Hi Terry, not sure if it is using live data or is downloading everything before you leave home. Or it may be using WiFi, which shouldn't run up your data use age.

On edit: just turned my WiFi off on my iPad and the app won't work. I keep my cell service turned off here at the house. Turned the WiFi back on and the app works. So it appears to need WiFi to work.

There is an Android App for the Milepost. One of the other posters would be right to watch out for your data usage. Last year be bought the Milepost and then downloaded the digital version to a laptop before we left.

I was just poking around on the Milepost website and didn't see any digital version of the Milepost 2014. Where/how does one get it?

I just received the hardcopy 2014 version.

The Android App gets terrible reviews on the Google Play store. Anyone here used it, if so is it worth trying?

The Roll Call Alaska 2014 thread is already 33 pages long and AFAIK no one has left for Alaska yet.

Really looking forward to leaving around May 24 +/- a day or so.

I could be wrong, but from looking at the Milepost web site they seem to say there is a digital version available, but like you I couldn't find it. If so, installing that on an iPhone, Android or tablet should give access to the contents without having to get on the Internet. That would be extremely useful.

And my reading of the Android reviews seem to indicate the app just gives access to a monthly magazine, not the actual version of Milepost published every year. It does appear to need Internet access to download the magazine content, so that makes it somewhat useless given limited access when on the highway and data charges involved.

Yes, there's a digital downloadable version, we used it last summer. You'll only have cell connection within a mile or two of the various towns.

Joe b, thanks for the clarification. WiFi will work at the overnight stops.

I've got the truck trained now. It just knows where to fuel up, where to hit the rest stop, and where to stop for the night. The lovely wife has taught it to place the overnights closer together.

Last August 22+ the road was in great shape. The section from the US Border to Beaver Creek was getting a serious workover, except for the last mile to the border. Winter will toss things around a bit and cause various surface failures, but the folks this year and next ought to see pretty decent road conditions.

One item that ought to be more prominent in the Milepost is fuel. The past few years you could not predict of depend on what fuel station would be operating at Haines Junction. Sue T suggested Otter Falls Cutoff, maybe 10 miles toward Whitehorse from Haines Junction, and they have been great.
