Trans Canada highway

If you're tired then you should have stopped at a safe location before you feel you have to pull over on a highway shoulder. FYI, this also applies to people who pull over to the shoulder to use their cell phone in a non-emergency.


Parking outside of an urban area

43(1) This section applies only to a highway that is outside of an
urban area.

(2) A person driving a vehicle shall not park the vehicle on a
roadway when it is practicable to park the vehicle off the roadway.

(3) Notwithstanding subsection (2), a person driving a vehicle
shall not park the vehicle on the roadway, parking lane or shoulder of a provincial highway except where

(a) the vehicle is incapable of moving under its own power,
(b) an emergency arises, or
(c) it is otherwise permitted by law.

Possibly the distance from access roads is greater in the east.

Parking on the side of the road will not be tolerated most places by any Police as there is a lot of wide loads being moved, Just parking on the shoulder is not the smartest move in any body's mind, how many get killed or injured just changing a tire, there is lots of places anywhere in Canada to get off the road, Just my thought's from a long haul trucker.

So, then why oh why aren't the average citizens insisting on proper shoulders? It's your taxes, as well as mine. We should be able to keep ourselves safe. & mandatory to safe is safe shoulders!!!!!!

Likely because 'proper shoulders' would unbelievable cost prohibitive. The shoulder is meant to be enough room to get out of traffic in an emergency.

There's lots of side roads, turn-outs and rest areas along any highway, let alone the TC.

If a person can't tell when they're getting too tired to drive in advance, and don't know about it until it's such an urgent situation they have to park on the shoulder of a major highway for a rest, then they shouldn't be driving. Period.

Thanks bcbouy, I'll look for camp free bc and mussio ventures. Sounds interesting

there's a book called camp free in bc.very good info for overnite stays.backroad mapbooks by mussio ventures is another.its my go to map book for exploring. everything worth seeing is listed as well as free camping,provincial parks,campgrounds,rv resorts etc. they have one for almost every area of western canada,yukon. you can camp on crown land as long as its not a permanent structure. a lot of free forest service campsites are just off the hiways. some have small fees,like 12 bucks or so. i've pulled up and overnited in the rest stops before. if you pull in late and leave early nobody bothers you .i've even overnited in the litter barrel pullins before. once i even pulled into a weigh scale station and overnited over in a far corner.you can probably do it at a truck stop if you wanted to.
