I pulled a 28 FT 5th wheel on that road a few years ago in the same direction and to not remember any problems. Very scenic road.
Be sure stop at Capitol Reed along the way. When we were there, we got permission to parked our trailer and just tour with the truck.

Goblin Valley State Park not too far East/North of Hanksville on UT-24 is worth visiting in my opinion.

No problem on this road; have done it several times and will be doing it again this Sept. We stay at Thousand Lakes in Torrey for Capitol Reef NP. We love Cap Reef and that area.

Drove that route 2 wks ago. You won't have any problem.

There's really just one small hill on that road that has any kind of drop off, and that's Blue Hills out of Hanksville, just before the Notom Road. Once you're on it, you'll laugh at my description, as most people wouldn't even notice it. The rest of the road is good highway and relatively flat most of the way. You do need to watch out for free-range cattle, esp. after dark.

What kind of weather can one expect in that country in September? Lows and highs?

A number of sites can give you seasonal temps. Here's one.

Rt.24 goes thru Cap.Reef Nat'l Pk. You don't have to pay a entrance fee. You should consider staying a few night s at their campground, called Fruita. Water only. If he has a height problem, you may not want to go down Rt.12 to Bryce.
