Utah highways 14 or 143 with travel trailer?

We'll be going from the Cedar City, UT area on I-15 to Hwy 12 (Bryce Canyon) pulling a 30' travel trailer this May. I'd like to take one of these scenic routes (14 or 143) over the mountains to Hwy. 89. Neither looks too curvy on Google Earth, but I don't know about grades. If I take my time, would either of these two roads be ok pulling a trailer? Sounds like the western slopes are steeper than the eastern ones, so I'd be going up the steeper side. I'd also like to camp a couple of nights on one of these highways; maybe Cedar Breaks, Panguitch Lake, or Navajo Lake areas. Are either of these two routes doable? I've traveled lots of mountainous roads and am not squeamish. Thanks for your help.
  • It's been years since we did that section of 14 and I don't recall anything extreme. If you plan to take 12 east of Escalante then I doubt 14 would be any worse.

143 I don't think we've been down and it's a faint gray line on my map so you might encounter more exciting terrain there. I recall picking Utah 261 as an out of the way route years ago and finding ourselves on the Moki Dugway pulling a small popup with a 'Burb. So you never know what you could hit in Utah....heh
  • I've towed a couple different TT's on those roads over the years. 14 was closed for awhile so you had to use 143. That said as I recall it has a sign saying TT's aren't recommended. I don't remember any curve type issues but it's fairly steep. I didn't have any issues but I was using a 2011 Ram diesel and only towing 8k. You see all sorts of RV's on 14 and I've never seen any seeming to struggle.

We love camping at Cedar Breaks in the summer. Keep in mind that the campground is somewhere around 10,000 feet in elevation so the season for use is fairly short and it is pretty cool climate wise, especially when you consider how hot it is just a few miles away in Zion national park.

If you wander off onto the dirt roads in the general area there are some lava tubes you can explore as I recall, and you can hike on a trail for half a mile or so and see where the Virgin river comes out of the side of the mountain prior to flowing down through Zion. There are also several nice forest service campgrounds in the area.

    Have fun
  • I answered you in another forum but here it is:

If you're used to driving mountains you're 27' rig will probably be O.K. Are you comfortable with your braking ability?

However, Hwy 14 is a very steep and curvy road - 8% grades, 25 mph curves, 10,000' summit which is 18 miles east of Cedar City. The eastbound descent has 6-8% grades and one section is 3-1/2 miles long and another is 4 miles long.

Hwy 143 heading east is a warning sign "13% uphill grades - not recommended for trailers."

The best highway to cross from I-15 to 89 in that area is Hwy 20. It's an easy drive.
  • The western side of 14 is the steeper and curvier side. Certainly can be done if you are up for a challenge. I would prefer to go uphill vs downhill if I was forced to do one or the other on the western side. Don't know 143, but looks like a great area to explore.
  • How is 143 east of the Cedar Breaks area? Looks like the worst part of 143 is west of Brian Head.
