Trip out west

My wife and I are contemplating a "major" RV trip out west from Pa to Klamath, OR to visit her sister.

Time frame would be late spring 2014, and we were thinking about a southern route out, northern route back home (due to weather considerations).

This would be a trip of several months, and we will have a new class A motorhome for the trip (gas engine, 32-34 ft).

Is there a resource of trips similar to this already made by members that we could research?
  • If you plan on doing the pacific coast hwy 101, i would recommend going across I 90 plenty to see and do across there. the pacific coast hwy is best viewed from north to south. I have made a few trips to Rapid city in may for the last few years with no weather problems.
  • Focusing for the moment on the Klamath Falls end of the journey. Options include:

    - from central California (say you came across on I40), I5 to US97
    - from Reno (having come across on I80), US395 to OR140, or CA139
    - from Winnemucca NV, NV/OR 140 (limited gas)
    - from Boise ID (having come on I80/I84), US20 to Bend, US97 south
    - or US97 south from I84
    - from Spokane (I90), US395, I84, US97

in late spring, I think all of these are fine.
  • Thanks much for all the good advice. The final destination is Klamath Falls, OR, and we are already looking forward to the trip of our lifetime.
  • WE are from Oregon but have lived Ohio for many years after retiring. We have made the trip to the west coast numerous times using varius routes. We prefer to use I-80 but I-70 is just about the same and both have interesting things on the route. You could also go up to I-90 and go through the Dakotas on the way back and see the Black Hills. We did the southern route I-40/I-10 twice when going out in the winter and it does add a couple days but the scnery is very different. Being retired military wqe have lived near most of these routes and Early spring is a gamble on waether and summer you risk severe storms. Weather versus routes needs to be considered but we've never been delayed more than two days. The computer makes it fairly easy to do route planning and this forum is an great place to get specific info. Good Luck.
  • If it is THIS time of year you are thinking about... I'd run west across tornado alley as quick as I could... the mid-part of the country is not where I like to linger in April/May.I'd rather wait out a snowstorm than outrun a twister! My 2-cents! ST
  • I80 most of the way os the easiest. IMHO blast put, then take a leisurely trip back doing all the site seeing. Do you mean Klamath Falls?
