We day trip to Joshua Tree once a year while staying in Palm Springs during December or January. Never had a problem.
I like entering from the Park from the entrance from the town of Joshua Tree. Then too, I like the North side of the Park better. Just love all those big rock formations. If time permits, do the Hidden Valley Nature Trail.
Some of the North side is 4000'. It can be cold.
