Vernal, UT to Rock Springs, WY

We are looking at taking US-191 from Vernal to Rock Springs near the end of April. The Mountain Directory West seems to describe this route as comparable to UT-12 between Escalante and Torrey (a road which we have been over several times). Anyone taken this road in the past year or so (particularly in late spring)?

40' DP towing a Jeep GC.

  • Good road........has a steeep windy climb out of Vernal to top at Dutch John then easy downhill thru Flaming Gorge. After that the drive to Rock SPrings is not very scenic

    End of April....
Pay close attention the 'weather' reports. Could be snow but more likely LOTS OF WIND
  • It may be a little early, but one thing we always enjoyed while driving north of Dutch John area up towards Rock Springs were the young antelope seen out grazing or with their mamas. Just keep your eye out, usually on the west side of the drive is where we noticed them the most. And definitely stop at the visitor center in Dutch John for some great views, I assume it's still there.
  • We took that road a couple of years ago. It was somewhat easier than 12 -- more pullouts, for sure.
  • We've been over it several times, it takes you right by Flaming Gorge which has a number of great boondocking sites. The road itself is fine.
  • Very nice campground at the top called Firefighters Memorial. Water and dump station.
  • Flaming gorge was empty in the beginning of october....just us and son met us there...great for boon docking right on the lake.
