Rock Springs, WY to Gros Ventre Campground

is 191 a good road to use? It was suggested to us to go thru Dubois to the park but looks a little out of the way since we are coming from the east on I-80. Just wondering how 191 is? Thanks Tara

191 is a good route but it's 50+ miles further than 287/Lander/Dubois. I like 287 better as it's a good scenic road plus it's worth a stop in Lander for Sink Canyon SP.

Routes 287/26 are IMO a much better route than route 191. Route 191 avoids going over the Togwotee pass, but the pass is an easy climb and descent and the scenery between Dubois and the pass is great. Also great views of the Teton mountains gong down the west side.

IMO the only reason to use 191 would be if you were coming across I80 from the west.
  • From I-80 at Rawlins it's 276 miles via 287 through Dubois to the Gros Ventre campground entrance.

From I-80 at Rawlins it's 295 miles via 191 through the VERY busy town of Jackson and to the Gros Ventre campground entrance.

Definitely take 287. It's shorter, more scenic and you don't have to go through Jackson.
  • Here's another vote for 287. We took that route a couple of years back, spending the night in Lander and headed into GT the next morning. As CloudDriver noted, you'd have to traverse the Togwotee pass, but it's an easy climb and descent with great views of the Teton's going down. If you do stay at Lander, there's an Indian casino not too far away where you can make a deposit if you're into that sort of thing.
  • ok 287 it is then. we are going to see great scenery so if that's the best then that's our route! Probably stay over in Lander then head out to GT the next morn. Thanks everyone! Tara
  • FYI, in Lander we have used Sleeping Bear RV Park a couple of times. About 7 miles west of town is Sinks Canyon State Park. We have used the campground there as well, but there weren't many level sites that were large enough for our MH. That said, the Sinks are unique and worth a quick stop before heading on to Grand Teton.

Here are two pictures we took at Falls campground near the top of Togwotee Pass back on 5/30/14. The campground was still closed due to snow.
