The Federal Trade Commission could take action against TripAdvisor after the Massachusetts-based travel company was accused of deleting hotel reviews that contained allegations of **** and other crimes.

Several people told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel this month they were sexually assaulted at Mexican hotels and resorts but the online reviews that mentioned the crimes were taken down.

Many moons ago before I got married, my wife to be went to the office Christmas party, she had one glass of wine only, at the time we used to have one glass of white wine while preparing dinner and another one with dinner, I had to go and fetch her since she could not drive home, she was not the only woman incapaciteted, I took another coworker to her home, both were dissy and very sick, next morning I did inform the Police about the incident, I did go back to the restaurant and lodged a complaint with management, couple of months latter was informed by a Detective that the bartender was spiking the drinks in order to water the next ones and steal the liquor, spiking the hard liquor takes two to three drops depending on the size ordered and wine only one, he used two drops in the womans wine, he did go to court and wife and coworkers did testify.

No it is not an urban legend this is done in the USA as well as in Mexico.

You need to be vigilant, there are nice places to eat and have a glass of wine and there are unscrupilous, greedy establishments.

Read what i wrote on this post about opening and checking bottles of beer and wine, I have been doing this since that night, wife to be was sick for Chistmas, thanks to a greedy idiot that can kill someone with a weeak heart or other unknown medical ailment!

It is more common that one thinks in the U.S. especially on university campuses. As this article states, there are more than 11 million hits for the term spiked drink on the internet in English.

Thanks for your belief in a horrible situation that really did occur.

We have read about similar things happening in California.

Well, this is disturbing. Talleyho is a pretty darn credible source. Up till now, I had attributed some of those stories about knock-out drops in the cocktails as scare-mongering. But I guess it's true. It sounds like a few bartenders are in cahoots with the bad guys -- the goal apparently is to rob the patrons after they pass out.

I wonder if we should be exercising the same precautions in the US? I have not heard of this nasty trick north of the border, but it is only a matter of time before it happens here.

We are with you, Chris, but we got roofied at the fancy bar at the time share in Mazatlan on the Gold Zone. Friends invited us for a cocktail, and very fortunately, he only drank beer that he opened himself. I ended up passed out on the beach in front of the place, and the other two were just as bad.
We now, like you, drink at home, or at a restaurant where we are known well here in Zihuatanejo.

I don´t go to bars. Everywhere in the world bars smell bad, are noisy and there are always drunks hanging out. I guess that´s why they have bars.

I buy my own booze and drink at home, in the rv park or boondocking spot.

Never have to worry. I´ve had some of the best liquor with rvers from Canada.

I check the foil on the wine bottle for tell taile signs of a hipodermic needle hole and that the rest of the foil is untampered once I cut the top off I turn the foil over to look for a hole that can not be hidden by massaging the foil to hide the tampering, many times they ask me if I do not trust the waiter, I tell them that I trust him but not the bar tender, I seldom drink wine since Mexican food goes better with beer, and that I oppen my self making sure to listen for the hiss and opening it away from me and directed towards the waiter, if he or she shoock the bottle they will get spayed, if they flinch I know they did shake the bottle.

I am not paranoyed just carefull, I do not like to be drunk, did that 3 times when I was a teen ager and never again, I do engoy a good wine red or white with my wifes cooking.

Do be carefull where you have a drink or beer, this also happens in some bars in the USA, be aware of the surroundings, and specially the type of place, althow it is hard to tell, some of the fancy restaurants and night clubs are not inmune from trying to get the patrons to spend more for watered-down drinks, there are also a lot of counterfit liquor and drinks being sold out there.

No, that is paranoid. Keep in mind that it is not necessarily bad, just is what it is. Been going to Mexico for 30 years, drink every time I'm there and never had a problem. Most likely the places I frequent aren't the places that have issues.

Here’s the original headline: FTC reviews TripAdvisor's business practices as more travelers say warnings of *****, injuries were blocked
The Milwaukee Jounnal Sentinel broke the original story. Since then Trip Advisor has agreed to leave negative reviews up for 3 months at which time they will have a committee review if should be deleted.
The bottom line is that they are putting their profits ahead of the safety of the clients. I am no longer posting reviews on their site nor would I trust it for travel information.
