west bound across Indianapolis, best direction bypass?

Will be West bound on I-70 tooward Indianapolis. What is best route around when headed out I-70 west bound on other side. Guessing cutting straight across city not that good on a week day. Any suggesttions appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  • I always drive straight through on 70. 465 on the North side always has backups during rush hour. 465 North or South adds unnecessary miles and time. You could sit still for a few minutes on 70 and it still would be faster.
  • FWIW, The Indy 500 is on Sunday, May 24th this year. And its inside of I-465.

Straight thru is OK between 9 am & 3 pm. There is a new Loves west of town at a quiet exit--would be much easier than 465 & 37 on south side. There is one short stretch of construction on the south side at 65 & 465 with narrow lanes.
  • We just got back. East to west on I-70 was totally clean and no road construction to I-65. Traffic moved well. That's about in to city center. Didn't see any signs as to upcoming construction.

  • I go through Indy about 25 to 30 times a year straight through on I 70 is best and very seldom any problem . Time it, any time after 8:30 am and before 4 pm ....good to go !
  • Just try not hit us around 5PM and you should be fine going straight thru on 70. If you need fuel there is a Flying J just off I-465 on the south side @ the Indiana 37 exit, that is exit #4. If there is an accident on 70 thru town - take 465 south around. It is MUCH shorter than the northern route.
  • We get out that way a couple times during the summer.
I think staying on I-70 is the best route.
  • Yeah, plan on those hours and you will be fine. Straight through on I-70. Now I haven't been on it this year, but we are camping east of there and will be going into Methodist Hospital on Wednesday. I would know more then.

I would check to see if there are any known areas of road construction on the internet first. But we always go straight through unless there is a serious problem.

I just checked a couple places on the web and there was only one area west of the city on one map. Another map didn't show it.

  • As with most metro areas, check the local traffic conditions and adjust accordingly. Between 10am and 2pm you should be ok.
