- bilmoExplorerWe traveled some in Peru, Argentina, Chile and a little in Brazil and Uruguay including a two week cruise from BA to Valparaiso. Saw several RVs and a a few RV parks. Saw a lot of ads for RVs for sale or rent. Took a bus from Puerto Iguazu to BA. For the most part the highways were good. The Lakes District of Chile (Puerto Montt)was beautiful and made for RVing.
However, the drivers in Lima are absolutely mad. Taxi rides were like you had gotten into a NASCAR race, but with both left and right hand turns. BA was just a massive traffic jam. - MEXICOWANDERERExplorerListened to Germans in a Unimog, they loved Chile. Absolutely no problems whatsoever they said.
- qtla9111NomadI've been there several times. Traveled by myself by air and by bus. Never an issue. Very nice highways, wonderful people, the food isn't so exciting (I'm prejudice towards Mexican).
Never a shakedown, never a bribe, I have friends who live there and travel there. No issues. Great country and happy people.
Here are a few good articles on Chile written by a Canadian friend who lives in D.F.
MexDFmagazine - IvylogExplorer IIISorry, do not know what I was thinking.... Lima is in Peru and yes, Chile is safe.:S
- Francesca_KnowlExplorerI know nothing about RVing in Chile but since my Great-Great Grandmother was Chilean and I hope one day to visit there, I'll follow the discussion with interest!

Chile or Peru or both???
Chile is regarded by travellers as a very safe, very police-corruption free country.
Lima (Peru) may not be the same.
I have friends who have travelled for years in the south of South America and they say the reports of corruption are somewhat exaggerated. Probably a bit like the situation in Mexico where a few incidents get blown out of proportion.
Give me another four months and I'll be able to give you a first-hand account - but I am expecting it to be very similar to Mexico in this regard - lots of stories, but few actual events that would cause problems for the traveller passing through. Some body knows or have info about Rving in Chile?
If you are in Chile now, you are in the perfect place to get some information.
But, perhaps a good place to start would be to research the RV hire companies who are operating in Chile. Andean motorhomes in Argentina also have a web site http://www.andeanroads.com and a big facebook site - http://www.facebook.com/pages/Andean-Roads-Motorhome-Rentals/105541432827923 - and they also have their RVs go over into Chile and there are plenty of stories from customers. - IvylogExplorer IIIA friend who lives there would not let us rent a car for travel in Chile... had us picked up at the airport in Lima by limo.
