WiFi

A few weeks back there was a post on an inexpensive cell phone with 5gig of wifi. Could someone refresh that as heading for Telcel as the telephone service out here at El Banito in Valles is very weak so need something I can put on an antenna. I have old Telcel USB plugs that I can use with a long cable, or the sell phone maybe the inexpensive cell phone for a hotspot.
  • Chris: You must have data on your phone(s). Why don't you use your phone as a hotspot? Does your stick get 4G?

  • Our ATT is set up to include Canada/Mexico and it works for internet quite well.
  • Ours works beautifully. We plug it in to the laptop, the Telcel software opens up and off we go. The internet doesn't discriminate between sticks or cell phones, it's looking for a paid signal from a chip.

In small towns or markets, always ask and you might be surprised. That's how we found our Telcel stick in San Miguel de Allende. The owner didn't have it on display but tucked away under the counter thinking no one would be interested.
  • I don't know if you can still use the sticks. If they are available. I threw mine in the trash. I wonder about the cost per G. I don't think they have 4G. Smartphones have taken over the market. Always on. No need for a laptop. The downfall is typing can be difficult for old folks with big fingers. If I can do it, anyone can.

Those are hard to find. We have a Telcel and a Movistar and just got a new chip for the Telcel.

Works great but everyone is going to cellphone hot spots.

Thanks I must have misunderstood. I'm off to TELCEL, I'll report back
  • There are no cell phones ( smart) that cost $17.00 Also no way to get 5G of data for that price. You can buy a cheap smart phone for about 1200 pesos. Comes with zero data.

  • There was a specified cell phone that cost $17 that gave 5 gig as part of package. I want to know what it was so that when I go to Telcel I can find out if it can be a hotspot.

Whichever I use (cellphone or USB plug)I'll need to mount it to an antenna (10' conduit)due to the weak signal.
  • Your rambling.
Cheap cell phones, like Tracfone or are you looking for a booster?
Boosters will only amplify what is already there. They cannot pull in what is not there.
