Winter has come to the Yukon

It may still be August, but snow fell on several Yukon communities this morning (Burwash Landing, Dawson, parts of Whitehorse, and probably others). It warms up quickly to the east of Whitehorse, though (it's warm in Watson Lake), and warmer weather is supposed to return late next week. I'm leaving in about 10 days for a 3-4 week RV wander from Whitehorse around BC and the Alberta Rockies, so am watching the weather very carefully. I don't have tire chains yet, but may get a set before leaving.
  • I am almost ready to hit the road as this is my first official day of vacation, weather delays with the intermittent hard rains of the past two weeks (with threatening to snow) here in the Fairbanks area has delayed me for three days behind schedule....

Most of my camper is packed up but now finishing up on upgrading my factory stock headlighting on my old rig with a two relay light system custom wiring upgrade (while disconnecting my stock wiring and leaving it intact) so that the headlights do not intermittently shut off on me anymore when driving at night - had to rely on my auxiliary lights for night driving (and daytime driving thru Canada) whenever the problem persisted since 2012 when it first started, and superior grounded the new dimmer and new headlight switch installed in 2013 thinking that would solve the problem, it helped and made it less frequent for the factory headlights to go out at random but didn't eliminate it.

Once this upgrade is done, my lighting will even be brighter and more reliable with no load to the light switch anymore in either lo or hi beam....and I have it set up to where I even have the option to run both lo and hi beams at the same time with no load to the switch...plus I still have my relayed auxiliary lights to boot as well.

Temps are at the freezing level at night here, and I much prefer to take a vacation during mid summer with all the daylight around, however my work will not allow me to take time off during the summer months other than September.

But at least with the limited time I have for vacation, the farther I head south it will be like July again as it warms up, but with limited daylight hours compared to the far north summers.

The cr*a*pp*y weather will either stay the same or it will break for a warmer trend so I will take what is handed out - I am just greatful to live in the RV again and holding up healthwise at the moment.

Looks like I will be in the Canadian Rockies area around the same time as explorenorth, I will look for a class A rig with Yukon plates and maybe will cross paths.
  • Heading north on the Alaska Highway Friday (Aug 28) afternoon, 50 km (30 miles) northwest of Whitehorse near Annie Ned Creek.

  • Gee, I guess I left too early! Or just in time, depending on how you look at it. :)
