Zion to Death Valley?

I'm ahead of schedule on my road trip, so I've decided to add a few days to drive out to Death Valley for a real quick visit before turning east for the journey home.

Microsoft is giving me this weird route:

Coming/going from Vegas on I-15, but what's with the loop route?

I haven't done much research on these roads, which route is better?

Thanks!
Gordon
  • So, Google agrees with Microsoft, and insists I make my east-bound trip on US-95 instead of AZ 160. Even adding US-95 to the avoid list, it still is listed as the preferred route.

Something's wrong with Verizon service in Springdale, I'm having trouble getting anything but text web pages to load. Are there major construction projects affecting east bound lanes on 160 or something else?

I guess I'll find out when I get there!
  • Check the Death Valley NP website. We were there in mid November & a large portion of the park was closed due to flood damage from the massive rain they got Oct. 18 (3" in 5 hours). Scottie's Castle will be closed 9 - 12 months, the road into the park from Shoshone was closed.
  • . . .If you go from Pahrump to Shoshone ( NICE Road ) there is an RV park there; volcanic heated swimming pool & some nice walks / things to see around that area. . .China Ranch down by Tecopa is pretty spectacular also ( best dates in the universe there ) DV is huge & has LOTS to see also. . . Fuel is pricey in Shoshone; fill in Pahrump. . .
  • Whatever you do, don't count on buying gas IN Death Valley. While there is a gas station in Furnace Creek, gas there was priced double what it was in Pahrump. I think they are trying to discourage fossil fuel use or something. Tank up before you get there.

Thanks for the feedback folks - I will use the southern route going both ways.

The way this Hemi burns gas, I'll likely be buying it both places, and more. Long as I have cell service, Gas Buddy is always used.

Once you are in DVNP I believe Gas Buddy will have a -very limited- selection to choose from. Strangely last time we were there diesel was cheaper than gasoline. And that situation continued all the way up 395.

Drop the top segment just keep going straight thru Pahrump on 160 to 190. That's the road thru DVNP. Fill your fuel tank before leaving the LV area.

I agree on the route but gas is a lot cheaper in Pahrump than Vegas.

Currently $1.97 in Pahrump vs $2.25 in Vegas(per the Gas Buddy app).

    :C
