Advice on campgrounds within Yellowstone.

Planning on a 2018 trip to Yellowstone. What are some good choices for campgrounds. I'll be there about 6 days/nights. I figure I'll spend 3 nights at one campground, and 3 at another.

I'd like one campground to be "relatively" near Old Faithful and other thermal hot spots. I'd like the other one "relatively" near lots of wild life, if possible.

Does Levar(?) valley usually have an abundance of wild life?

My equipment is in my signature.
  • Fishing bridge and Madison.
Fishing Bridge has hook ups. Madison does not. Madison has water available and dump station.
  • I prefer Madison for the bottom loop and Mammoth Hot Springs at the North entrance for the top loop and Larmar Valley.
Mammoth is first come. Arrive by mid morning. I have always gotten a site.
  • This year, 2017, I was planning on a trip to Yellowstone. Even had 6 nights reserved at Fishing Bridge. That trip got cancelled. This time I'm thinking about splittng time between two different campgrounds. Madison is on my short list. I need another suggestion in the NE quadrant. Or other good suggestions in other places. Just want to see the thermal features, wildlife, and places like the canyons.

I want as full of an experience as I can get in about 6 days.

  • We spent 7 nights at Madison when we visited. I would recommend Madison for half the time and maybe Canyon for the other half. The park is huge.
  • Pebble Creek campground in the Lamar Valley is very nice, first come first served. It is in the NE as you requested, next to a beautiful fast running creek. Dry camping.
  • Fishing Bridge is the ideal location but you need to reserve NOW for 2018........

We just did 8 nights in early June 2017, we reserved on May 1, 2016 to get one of the 18 sites large enough for our montana for 8 nights.

we did Grand Tetons after Yellowstone for 8 nights and reseved June 1, 2016 for it at Colter Bay is excellent........
  • If you need hookups, Grizzly RV in West Yellowstone would be a good fit for the Old Faithful area. The northeast section of the park has several dry camping CGs, Pebble Creek being (I believe) the largest. Again, if you need hookups, there are a couple private CGs in Gardiner, MT that would be a decent stay for the north end of the park.

Fishing Bridge is centrally located but is cheek to jowl.
  • Pebble Creek, Slough Creek, Tower, and Mammoth campgrounds are located in the Northern part of the park. You can read more about each here. All of these are dry camping. Mammoth is the only one that allows generator use if that is a factor for you.
