Any good CG near Kemmerer WY?

We wanted to stop for a couple days in Kemmerer and go to some of the you dig fossil sites and also Fossil Butte NM. But there seems to be a complete lack of even mediocre campgrounds. The two in kemmerer get ratings of 1 to 3 on RVParkreview and one in Evanston isn't much better. Anyone know of a better spot? There are some BLM sites at the reservoir nearby. The nearest site with a decent rating is at a parking lot at Little America (shopping center?) about 60 miles away.

  • We didn't like anything in Kemmerer so we ended up going to the KOA in Lyman. It was a shame because I really enjoyed Fossil Butte National Monument and would have spent more time there if there was a decent campground nearby.
  • To add just a little bit, not a place I would want to spend more that a couple of nights. But felt it was worth it to be so close to the dig. 4 hrs of breaking rock in the heat, about all I wanted was a picnic table and a beer. So riverside worked out.

Full Timers there, seem to be working in the coal and natural gas industries, so not a scarey place at all.

It is on the Hams Fork river, which they claim has some big trout, but I never caught any. Place is old and kind of beat up, Sites are close like any typical private campground.

So not great, but not to horrible, we have stayed in worse.
  • Riverside is not to bad, Kind of like your typical KOA. When you do the fossil dig, at least with us they wanted us to meet them at their shop in town, and follow them out. Wanted us there in the very early AM, to get out there and beat the heat.

So being close to town was a big plus. People that ran it seemed nice, has full hookups as I recall.

I have stayed in a lot worse
  • I think I read a review on rvparks that duplicates your experience.

  • A couple of years ago I stayed at Foothills RV park. It is mostly long term users and when I called to make reservations they said I couldn't, just show up. There is a kiosk at the entrance that want's your money and to find your own site. I couldn't find a site that was open and not blocked with a "reserved" sign which I found odd since I wasn't able to make a reservation??? I kept calling the number listed and finally someone answered and put me in one of the reserved sites...go figure? There is a Restaurant/Bar/Laundromat/RV park across the street that I plan on trying the next time I go there: Hams Fork Grill (http://thehamsfork.com/index.php)
