Any reason to go across the boarder in Yuma?

Planning our time in Yuma. Trying to decide whether to take our passports. Is there any real reason to go across the boarder in Yuma other than to say been there done that? Don't need dental work or anything like that. Might buy a bottle of tequila. Do you walk across, take a taxi or what. Got to ask... How safe is it?

Went today ๐Ÿ™‚

got dental cleanings for 1/2 price of what they are at home.

You say you don't need dental, do you have insurance?

Husband got glasses 1/2 price.

I felt very safe. No issues. LONG line coming back in ๐Ÿ™‚

A few restaurants, we ate at La Parrilla and had $3 margaritas and $2 beer ๐Ÿ™‚

it's the only one we've eaten in (just our 3rd time across)

Prescriptions and OTC drugs are cheaper.

I never leave home without my passport.

Should you take your passport YES, you never know when you might need it.

Is it worth crossing over into Algodones? For us only for cheaper dental, meds & optical, wouldn't cross just for a look see personally. Feels far more comfortable to be in than Tijuana we went to for lunch once, and that we'd never ever go back to for all the tea in china (threatened to throw hubby in the can about 15 years ago and scared the c*@p out of us all, as did stripping cars for drugs, ripping off panels, kids begging and packing bags in supermarkets = heartbreaking to see). If you like to go over to dine, drink or flea market type stuff, then go at 'er. For us no border town crossings into Mexico just for a look see except Algodones purely for meds and dental or aiming to get as far away from the border towns as possible for a resort area and with a group for our comfort levels.

Once bitten ...................

We aren't against Mexico totally even after all we read and personally experienced. In fact we look forward one day to caravanning with some others down the Baja, that we postponed from doing this past winter due to the looting after the hurricane last year. Didn't want to tempt fate right now.

Go further south and join the 100's of other RVers who have discovered the joys of RVing in Mexico. Worst thing that has happened to me is a coconut dropped on my rig yesterday (no damage)

Crossing the border at Nogales and at Los Algadones is as different as January in Lebanon, Indiana and January in Yuma, Arizona ......
nothing compares. We have crossed at both.
Yes take your passport, if you don't go over no harm but if you go you will need it. They have a welcome back party in the fall and a goodbye party in the spring for the snow birds. Besides the food, drinks, and shopping.

Is your real question..."Any reason to go across the boarder in Yuma?" or is it "Should we bring our passports?"

If it is .... "Should we bring our passports?" Why ask, passports are very light and don't take up much room in the RV, they can be put in your pocket and if a trip comes up you have them and are ready to go. There you are setting around the table and talking to your new found friends and all say "hey, lets run over for a meal" and you can't go because your papers are back at home. Also they prove you are American and not a illegal. If it is ..."Any reason to go across the boarder in Yuma?" the answer is maybe, but if there becomes a reason and you left your stuff at home.... you are SOL. Take it anytime you leave home, you never know in todays world.

you can't cross the US/Mexico border without a passport now, If you stay near the border you shouldn't have any issues, many shops and places to eat in around the area.

Is Viagra cheap there? Do you need to take your prescription? I just want it to keep me from rolling out of bed at night....

"Any recommendations on where to purchase eyeglasses in Algodones. Do you take your own prescription from US or have one there?"....as soon as you cross the street, you will find an optical store on your left...where you can present your US prescription, and or get a fresh exam on the spot. Your glasses should be ready in a couple of hours.

Take a day trip into Algodones if you have never been. We went last week and I got 3 bifocal glasses with plastic lens and my wife got bifocal reading glasses for a total of $420. The total time from start to finish was 3 hours. Avoid the Paraiso restaurant in the courtyard--it never was very good for Mexican food but has gotten noticeably worse in the past several years. Many eat there because it's safe, with live music, English speaking waiters, etc...but the food is marginal at best. Since we snowbird in AZ, Yuma is very convenient for us but we only go when we need glasses, liquor, meds or dental work.

You should park in the large parking lot on the U.S. side of the border for $8 (Class C) and walk across. There is only one parking lot (unlike Nogales) so you can't miss it. Just remember where you park.

IMO, it's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
