Anyone biked around the Gettysburg battlefield?

Thanks for the replies everyone. Multiple days would be great…….hopefully my wife can find several days of activities around Gettysburg to keep her occupied.

We did it about 7-8 years ago, it took us 3 days, no hurrying involved. Bought a tour tape in visitor center and enjoyed the ride, we also stayed at Gettysburg CG. Took lots of snacks and drinks and just relaxed.

We were there a couple of years ago--wish we had brought our bikes! Lots of folks touring the park that way.

While there, get a local or the visitor center to tell you how to get to Sach's Bridge--a beautiful covered bridge.

Back in the 70's we rented mopeds in town and rode them around the battlefield tour. It was great fun. You could certainly ride the route on a bicycle. In fact last time we were there I was thinking it would be a good place to bring our tandem.

Yes. It's a great place to bike as it just adds to the solitude (when you ignore all the tour busses). If you go in the summer it can be VERY hot. Biking from the cg to the battlefield will present a challenge. Busy road, not a lot of shoulder space if I remember correctly.

We stayed at Gettysburg Campground during our Gettysburg stop on our cross-country trip. Very nice campground. It just happened to be during the annual Gettysburg Bike Week (not planned)... Harleys (and many others) everywhere, all day, all night. The campground was full of bikers (I think we were the only non-bikers there). Some rode in and were camping in small tents.. Others drove in with huge toy haulers, then rode into town. Loud all day and a low rumble in the air all night. Fantastic weekend.

Looks like a bike tour from the campground will start at the visitor’s center or at the Pennsylvania memorial; opposed to starting at stop 1 (in chronological order).

Love camping / adventures but I’m retired (56) and my wife wants to work part time….not sure how manage my “restlessness”.

Do it! Pack a light back pack with a snack and water. It is really cool to tour at your own leisure.

For those that cannot bike, there is a CD available at the CG for a driving tour. Just stop the CD when you are told to, or when you need to get out to take pictures or examine the monuments.

I've done both. There are monuments EVERYWHERE!

make sure to spend time in the National Cemetery as well.
