...and here's a 4th for Rafter J. Just left there two days ago after spending five nights in their Ranch campground section. The best FHU site we'd ever had, and we've had a lot of them over the years. Quiet, surrounded with Pondorosa pines, and with lots of room between sites. If that's the type of sites you like, I'd go with their Ranch or Island camping areas. Their other areas tend to be more open, but are closer to the swimming pool if that's important to you.
While in the area, we did check out several of the other campgrounds and found that they were more like the KOA experience... close sites, side-by-side. It really all depends on what you want for your camping experience, but if you like some privacy and spend time sitting outside of your rig, I'd definitely go with Rafter J in the Island or Ranch areas.
As mentioned in an earlier post, don't stay in Rapid City. Head into the hills instead as you'll be a lot closer to the various things to see and do. Hill City is relatively easy to get to traveling 16 out of Rapid City, and is very centrally located. North to Deadwood and south to Rushmore, Custer, the Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road. And if you're in to old railroads, take a trip on the 1880's train out of Hill City. It's a blast.
