Ca, Okla, Tenn, La. Tx N.M. Az Calif.

I will be going next Sept leaving Bakersfield, Calif Hwy 58 . to I-40 going East.

Destinations:
Must go to Shawnee, Okla, & Siloam Springs, Ark,
Thinking about planning the rest of my trip via these cities which I have never been to:
Branson, Mo.
Memphis & Nashville, Tenn, go down the Nachez Trace, New Orleans, La.
Galvaston, Port Arnasas, San Antonio, Tx., Roswell, N.M., Alamagordo, N.M.

then don't know.. was thinking about going up I-25 to Albq and stopping on
some of the Route 66 stuff coming back home to Calif.

I will not be doing much siteseeing on my way to Shawnee, Okla. thus overnite stays.

I like to drive between 4-5 hours.. can do 6 hrs. So I need overnite stops Until Shawnee.
After Shawnee, Okla. I can slow down and
smell the roses. As you can see by the cities, I will be spending a few days or week? in each.
I really don't have a plan or timeframe.. think this will poss be about 2 months.

One question is I don't know if I should do Memphis or Nahsville first from Branson.

That's where I hope you folks will come in. What routes have you been on in these areas and
where did you stay, what did you see?

I have a 35' Class A and have a tow car. I'd like to have pull thrus for my "overnite" stops or
Walmart, Casino etc. so I don't have to unhook toad. I will be traveling alone so would like to keep
the hook/unhook to a minimum on "traveling" days.

I have PassPort America and Escapees and Senior National Parks Pass
. so I should be able to get discounts as I will be off season.
This is not a requirement, I just want Water/Elect min. when I stay for days/week.
Would like your info, I'll also be checking RVparkreviews.com

I've done the I-8 to San Diego and I-10 to Palm Springs many times so would like to do some I-40
stuff coming home.

Thanks for your help.

  • San Antonio -- I highly recommend Travelers World RV park. PA park close to downtown. I've stayed there several times. Bus stop right across the road & it's a quick 10-minute ride downtown. Buses in San A. are punctual, clean, and safe. Best way to see downtown & one way was $1.25 last I was there. MUCH cheaper than parking!
  • Check out the Grand Ole Opry and Jack Daniels in Tennessee
  • PS... www.casinocamper.com has casinos listed that have RV parks or dry camping.
Allstays.com has lists of Walmarts and other sites for overnight boondocking.
www.recreation.gov has the Corps of Engineers campgrounds that are reasonably priced even if you don't qualify for the seniors or disabled half price discounts.
  • In Amarillo, Oasis RV park. Long level pull thrus.
west of Albuquerque 2 casinos with either dry camping or rv parks: Dancing Eagle and Sky City.
Kingman, AZ - Blake Ranch RV Park and Motel. Low rates, not fancy.
In Sikeston MO - Hinton RV Park. Easy off I-55.
In Memphis, Tom Sawyer in West Memphis Arkansas. (agree best to go to Memphis before going to Nashville)
In Nashville we liked Two Rivers RV Park and catch the Natchez Trace SW of Nashville off hwy 100. (one day drive)
Natchez MS, stay at Riverview RV Park. Passport America park.
New Orleans depends on how close you want to stay near French Quarter. French Quarter RV Park and Lake Ponchartrain Landing are 2. We prefer to stay at a state park and drive into New Orleans. Fountainbleau State Park in Mandeville LA. Don't miss the WWII Museum.
  • From Branson stop in the Memphis area (Tom Sawyer's West Memphis Ark) then on to Nashville. From Nashville head east on 40 to the Natchez Trace exit and head south to Natchez Ms. From there you can go to New Orleans and south Texas.

    Drove US 380 - Carrizozo-Roswell / US 70 Roswell-Alamagordo / US 82 Alamagordo-Cloudcroft this past week.

    Take US 70.

Casino - Inn of the Mountain Gods just west of Ruidoso has a parking lot type RV park. Most RV parks in Ruidoso (we looked at almost all of them) will require unhooking the toad.

A few miles north of Tularose where US 70 meets US 54 north of Alamogordo - is Three Rivers and the BLM Three Rivers Petroglyphs Site. It has two 50 Amp pull thru RV sites $9 for the Senior Pass. (no sewer connections or dump station but the on-site host can point you to a close by free dump station)

Currently a lot of the RV parks across south and west Texas are full of oil-field workers. Even places along I-10 across Texas west of SA are difficult to find. And there are very few Walmarts along that route. One nighters at truck stops might be easier.
  • Quite a trip!
We can vouch for the Natchez Trace being well worth your time. It's a beautiful ride (we did the Tupelo - Nashville section). Didn't use the Trace CGs but found a decent private CG in Tupelo only 1/2 mile or so from the Trace entrance. (The Trace, like an interstate, has only limited entrances/exits, but otherwise is a parklike, 2-lane road with a maximum speed limit of 50 mph, lower in some spots.) There's a visitor center near the Tupelo entrance too, which will help with maps, info, etc.
