- Us_out_WestExplorerWe visited Bodie, over 300 miles N of Calico off 395, in 2011 and indeed it was a great place to see.
Calico (Barstow area) will just be a short stop over on our way back to Reno via Bakersfield and Lodi. - Rocky2ExplorerIt is unlikely that he would be able to get to Bodie in April. The snows will have the road closed for sure. Bodie is absolutely the better ghost town and a state historical park which is well preserved.

He's right about it being more authentic. Calico is very touristy. Lot of it was rebuilt in the 1960s with tourist retail. But with that in mind I enjoyed it anyway. While it may not be ghost town old, it is 1950s-1960s tourist attraction old..and for this boomer kind of nostalgic in it's own way. - lhenry8113ExplorerIf you do get to Calico--if time permits try to get to "Bodie"--I think it is more authentic. I stayed there new year's day this year-a busy holiday-no reservations . All the full hookup sites were taken. There was quite a few back-in water/elec sites open. Some not too level. Friend's 35' class A fit fine. Found a couple sites which were pretty decent..didn't take too many leveling blocks. There appeared to be some no hookup sites too at the end of the loop.
VZ worked fine up at the ghost town. Iffy in my location in one of the upper loops. Booster helped.
I actually enjoyed the fried chicken at the ghost town restaurant. But friends with me were not all as happy with their food.
All in all fine with it-campground and ghost town, would stay there again. There is a KOA nearby (level pull throughs) if you can't find something suitable. But a few more $.
Edit: The site I was in may have been electric only. - Us_out_WestExplorer

Does Calico get busy in early April?
Thanks Dennis - dkreuzenExplorerWe have stayed at the KOA and it was fine. The campground at Calico gets really busy on the weekends.
