I lived in Tega Cay, SC for a number of years, just south of the theme park. Camp Wilderness is simply a convenient place to park a RV in order to visit Carowinds. Outside of that, it's a wash, IMHO. You can get an idea on
RV Park Reviews.
There are two parks I could recommend for their natural ambiance that are within an easy drive to Carowinds.
McDowell Park is a Mecklenburg County park in SW Charlotte w/electric & water ($26/night). My choice would be
Ebenezer , a York County park located in Rock Hill, SC. The 26 acre park is located on Lake Wylie nestled between some expensive homes. FHUs, clean restrooms, free WiFi, OTA TV with between 25-30 channels, Verizon cell is 4G for $28/nite. It is first come, first served.
The comments on RV Park Reviews for Ebenezer reflects a negative feeling regarding York County's price increase nearly 2 years ago. The senior price (age 60+) increased 160% from $10/night to $26/nite. While there is a 2 week stay limit during the camping season, the park allowed unlimited stays during the off-season. A senior extended traveler or full timer could winter there for $300/mo FHUs. Additionally, during the season, locals (@ $13/night) would tie up the sites with two families alternating every 2 weeks. The park stayed full and it made it impossible for travelers coming off the road Wed-Sat to acquire a site. The price hike changed all that. It aggravated the locals who stopped camping there or at least limited their visits. The price hike also exceeded the extended traveler's and full timer's perceived value during the off-season.
While the rates were brought into line with surrounding government parks, it's still a bargain for what you get. However, it's strictly leisure camping. Too expensive for locals to use as their lakeside summer home and definitely not a value for an extended traveler or full timer to spend a month or two during the off-season.
