Campfire Wood

So I think we have decided to camp at Bayley's Campground in Maine and the KOA Boston/Cape Cod when we visit Mass.

With this said...anyone that has camped at these campgrounds, where is the best and cheapest place to purchase wood for campfires?
  • The bag at Bayley's is $10 and it does burn good. There are plenty of places around though, just take a drive. Have fun, love that area.
  • It's been a couple of years since we have stayed at KOA Boston, but there was a house about a mile past the CG on the right that sold firewood on the side of the road. Can't promise they are still there, but it was a lot cheaper than buying the bundles from the camp-store.

  • Consider using wood pellets. There's a place here in Maine that makes cages (for lack of a better word) made of stainless steel mesh. Repose Fire Logs: http://woodpelletlogs.com/ Fill the cages with pellets and they'll burn like regular firewood. Best part: you can haul pellets from state to state (I use big buckets like the ones chemicals for swimming pools come in, or drywall buckets), and they run about $4/40-pound bag. You'll do a lot of burning to go through 40 pounds in a weekend, and if you don't, which we never do, you just take them home for the next time. Make sure you get hardwood pellets.
  • I remember Bayley's selling big burlap bags of fire wood,(that was 8 yrs ago) burned well too. Lots of campgrounds in the Old Orchard Beach Area...and lots of people selling it on the side so you shouldn't have a problem locating some.

  • No specific information about those locations, but generally I've found it a lot cheaper to buy from folks in the neighborhood. Most times they'll be set up on the roads within a mile or two of the cg. Buying at the cg is usually overpriced, and often green.
