Campgrounds going south on 395 from Reno

We are traveling this way and are looking for suggestions for campgrounds good for a big rig. Forest Service would be especially
great so we could use the access pass for half price. Any ideas?

There a lot of places. BLM campgrounds, If you have inter-agency pass they are half price.

There is a great FS campground called Robinson Creek up the road to Twin Lakes from Bridgeport. We've stayed there. Nice.

South of Bridgeport about 10 miles a road to the right takes you up to the Virginia Lakes, where there is a good FS campground called Trumbull Lake. Our favorite sites are closer to the lake. It's stunning.

Coming down into the Mono Lake Valley, there's a bunch of FS campgrounds as you head up to Tioga Pass from Lee Vining. The closest one to Lee Vining is Big Bend, which is NOT on the Tioga Pass road.

In the June Lake loop, there are several nice FS campgrounds - we prefer Silver Lake and Oh! Ridge, which is the closest to the 395.

While there are a few between June Lake and Mammoth, we haven't been to them. We don't use the ones in Mammoth, either, because of the crowds.

Convict Lake has a nice FS campground.

Then the Rock Creek drainage has a few that can handle big rigs, especially East Fork. That's our favorite. Rock Creek Lake CG's sites are too small - more for pop-ups and class B's. Along the 395 next to the turnoff for Rock Creek there's one called Tuff, but I don't know about the size of the sites.

About 5 miles W of Bishop is a campground called Pleasant Valley. While it's not FS (It's a county park) it's only $12 night. Might be $10. Definitely can handle big rigs. We like to go around and across the river and park right on the river.

Up the hill just before you drop down to Pleasant Valley is a BLM campground - usually used by the rock climbers in the Owens Valley Gorge. I don't recall seeing big rigs in it.

We did that leg on our maiden voyage and it was nice. There is a place where the wind get's bad and warning signs will warn you.
We stayed at Convict Lake and you better get reservations as many of the sites are on hillsides and won't fit a big rig, but it is really wonderful. Washoe Lake near Carson City appears to have large enough spots. AND further south, Red Rock Canyon, off 14 is really nice and has plenty of spots that will fit a large rig.

June Lake will probably have snow. Just south of Reno is Washoe lake and Davis Creek.

We also stayed at the fairgrounds in Bishop. Gravel parking lot with hookups but ok for a night.

You can boondock in Alabama Hills off Movie Rd, just west of Lone Pine. You might also want to check out the Inyo County campgrounds. We just came down 395 two weeks ago and stayed at Bishop RV Park (in the fairgrounds) and at Boulder Creek in Lone Pine (where Lauren is going to stay). Liked them both.

We are sitting at Mono Vista right now in Lee Vining. Have been here a few times before. It is full tonight. We will also stay at Boulder Creek in Lone Pine as we head home in a few days. Have not a clue on FS campgrounds though.

Bishop Field Office of the BLM has several campgrounds, $2.50 per night with your interagency senior pass. Tuttle Creek is the prettiest, Goodale Creek in usually the quietest.

Extra charge for dump station at the camps that have one. Don't count on there being any water.

Might want to look at a couple of June Lake NF campgrounds if you don't require hookups about 150 miles S of Reno. Bring your own water.

Not FS but Browns Town (RV Park) in Bishop is very nice and not too pricey. We paid $25 in our 24' Class C in late August.

Convict Lake Campground is about 34 miles north of Bishop, California on Highway 395. From Bishop, travel north on 395. The turnoff to the campground is across from Mammoth Yosemite Airport and is well-signed. From Mammoth Lakes, travel on Highway 395 south for 5 miles. Turn west off of Highway 395.

On CA / NV border, I've always liked Lake Topaz CG/Casino. I think its still 20 bucks a night and you get some great Casino coupons for food and drink. I believe they give a triple A/ Good Sam discount.
