camping around Atlanta

Planning a trip early Summer and would like info on any CGs in the Atlanta area. Know about Stone Mountain CG. Anything else within a 25 mile radius of the city?
  • Since the weather has warmed up some, there should be lots of places to Boondock on the side of the interstate now......:S
  • There is a KOA at Exit 296 north of the city right on the west side of I-75, I have stayed there several times with a 45'. I understand there are new managers as the previous were not the best. Easy in and out with ample space but nothing other than a pool. The COE has several campgrounds 25 miles north of Atlanta near Alatoona Lake. One of them is McKinney campground and is open all year. I have stayed there also, but no sewer at site just a dump area. It is slim pickings around Atlanta. With the amount of traffic around Atlanta a nice easy in and out campground near the interstates and not too far from the city is of much need.
  • Don't limit yourself to 25 minutes from the city. Go to The Georgia State Parks Website and check out what they have to offer. We have some great state parks. Almost all have water/electric and several do offer full hookups. I haven't stayed at anywhere that I didn't enjoy. There are several within 30 to 45 minutes of Atlanta.

Did you mean a different KOA? Forsyth KOA is in Forsyth Georgia. That's south of Atlanta and closer to Macon.
  • stayed at Marietta Rv park several years ago, when DD lived nearby. I stayed for Thanksgiving and was only in park to sleep for the weekend, so can't say a lot more other than it was convenient to where I wanted to be. Seemed to be a lot of permanent or long term residents.

Stone Mountain is probably most convenient if you are touring. Marta station with parking nearby, so you can ride the train to downtown attractions.
  • We stayed at High Falls State Park's Riverside Campground.Water and electric hookups, large sites, nice restroom's with laundry facilities. It's about 30 miles south of Atlanta. They also have a Lakeside loop but that's not as nice and has smaller sites than Riverside loop.
  • In Newnan there is a new State park called Chattahoochee Bend that has a CG. Downside is its new and our new state park CG's are pitiful. 25 miles is a pretty small radius from downtown. You may get a hit on some CG's in Austell and/or Lilburn which I would avoid. Roughly 35 miles will get you some Corp of Engineer CG's in Buford and Cumming and both are nice (Buford is very popular) The COE places don't open until April, however.
  • Every time I go thru Atlanta I stay at the KOA just outside the city. I usually layover there and head out real early and go thru the downtown when heading south. Forsyth KOA
