Camping at Sturgis

We are planning our first ever trip to Sturgis Bike Week in 2017. Yes we are planning it that far out.

If you have been within the past 10 years please let me know where you stayed and let me know the good and the bad about that place.

Who we are: 4 people in their 50s

Equipment: 37' Gasser towing a bike trailer.

What we are looking for: Some action within the campground but not a total party place. We would like a place that actually allows people to sleep at night. It would be great if they offer a shuttle to area attractions like the Chip or the Throttle (if it reopens). We also plan to ride a bunch when there so a campground that you can get in and out of would be great.

The place must have at least 30 amp but 50 would be preferred. Sewerage hook up at the site would be super.

My mother stayed here with her Alegro a week before the rally in 2012 and said they claimed you could sleep at night (during the rally):

Yes, my mother went to Sturgis, and she got me a T-shirt...

Seeing as how they basically print money all week, it will be rebuilt..

When we went, we got there the Wed before the event and were glad we did. Nobody there, you could pick and choose. We rode all the scenic loops, checked out the campgrounds. Ended up at Happy Holiday RV Resort 5 miles outside Rapid City. Clean, FHUs, quiet at night and far enough outside the city that the stars were great.

The Chip and the others like them have burnout pits and too many hard partiers. I'm no Bible school teacher but I like my sleep. Anywhere around Sturgis is crowded and noisy. In Rapid City there are grocery stores, Walmart, restaurants and the cg was quiet at night.

I'll also say that the roads and parking lots are so jammed during the event that you could hardly park. All the wonderful rides and scenic loops that were so awesome the week before were no fun after the event started. We actually left early like Thursday because we had had enough.

We live 45 minutes from Daytona so have seen plenty of Bike Week action over the years. Whats great about Sturgis is the scenery and roads.

The hill climb event was cool too.

You might begin with Broken Spoke campground. And if that does not work there are many others. Some campgrounds do not allow alcohol.

Very good.

I was there last September, (no bikes) and was pleasantly surprised to find electrical hookups everywhere. I sidled up to a pedestal in a large market parking lot and had a very pleasant and free overnight.

Not only have I done the search, I built a spreadsheet with each CG that I could find. I added amenities, pricing, size, attractions and ratings. Then I looked up youtube videos and added hyper links to them. This is all part of my process. My wife hates it but ends up loving the places we go.
