Wilmington Notch is a State cg close to Lake Placid but the sites are tight. Meadowbrook is another possibility but we've never stayed there.
Fish Creek / Rollins Pond are popular but they're a bit away from Lake Placid.
For a private cg our favorite is North Pole Resort (100 Acre Wood side) in Wilmington.
