Canyon Point CG (Central AZ)

Back to one of our favorite Cg's, Canyon Point atop the the Mogollon Rim at 7,700'. For the first time in decades Arizona has been getting rain in May& June thanks to the early eastern Pacific hurricanes. The rain has moved out but we got a nice soaking late yesterday and last night before but not before enjoying a cozy fire from 4 - 7.

Sitting in the Ponderosa Pines at 72* midday in June it is hard to believe we are in Arizona but then 7,700'' of elevation will do that. The CG is nearly full and will be throughout the summer, reservations are always a good idea here.

We are enjoying 30 amps for $16.50 a night courtesy of our Geezer cards. Will hit the two lane dump station on our way out tomorrow with another night or two at Sharp Creek or Christopher Creek at the foot of the Rim before we head back home to Tucson. Worth every minute (an easy 4 hour drive), to come up here and beat the heat.
Canyon Point remains our favorite Mogollon Rim CG.... what's not to like?

    Desert Captain, Thanks! It sounds very interesting. So I looked it up, yes, a neat place.

    "Canyon Point has 106 camping units with 32 units having electricity. Tents, trailers and motor homes up to 75 foot are all allowed at the campground. For those who need it, three family units are universally accessible. Larger families can be accommodated at the five double sites which can accommodate upto 16 people each. There is a small group campsite that can accomodate up to 25 people and a large group site available for large groups up to 55 people.
    Hiking trails to Sinkhole and edge of the Mogollon Rim. This campground is approximately 5 miles from Willow Springs Lake which provides boating and fishing opportunities. It is located in a ponderosa pine forest. Be prepared for rain, often heavy, through July and August. Expect cool to cold nighttime temperatures.

    Directions from Heber: The entrance is located on State Highway 260 approximately 4.5 miles east of the Rim Visitor Information Station or 19 miles west of Heber, Arizona."

    OK, back home and able to post a couple of pics:



    One of the many nice things about Canyon Point is that there is almost unlimited firewood lying dead on the ground if you just bother to hike a little and pick it up. We enjoyed three nights around the campfire and never had to venture more than a couple of hundred yards from our sites to gather the wood. We spent three nights in three different sites and enjoyed them all. Here is another:

    If I were you I'd be making plans to come back up on The Rim. :) Your 100+ temps are beginning.... It was in the 70's today up here!

    You are correct sir! Actually we will be doing a ten day trip over to San Diego later this month with another trip up to the White Mountains before that. June is the one month of the year that we try and avoid being in Tucson as much as possible. By July first the Monsoon has usually arrived, Momma Nature's pyrotechnics and heavy rains make things much more pleasant (not to mention exciting).

    Fortunately we live about 25 miles north of downtown Tucson. Our 3,400' elevation just below Mt Lemmon usually nets us 6*'s cooler than downtown.... and it's a dry heat (much like a Pizza oven). :B
